NBCUniversal News Group has vowed to make the newsroom more diverse.
They begin with replacing the longtime president of MSNBC with a woman of color.
Rashida Jones will be the next president of the progressive-leaning news network. She will replace Phil Griffin. Under Griffin, the network has risen from third place to competing within striking distance of the far-right cable network, Fox News.
The network’s hosts include, Kasie Hunt, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Willie Geist, Stephanie Ruhle, Hallie Jackson, Craig Melvin, Andrea Mitchell, Chuck Todd, Katy Tur, Ayman Mohyeldin, Nicolle Wallace, Ari Melber, Joy Reid, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O’Donnell, Brian Williams, Kendis Gibson, Lindsey Reiser, Ali Velshi, Tiffany Cross, Jonathan Capehart, Alex Witt, Yasmin Vossoughian, Al Sharpton, Alicia Menendez and Joshua Johnson.
NBCUniversal Chairman Cesar Conde announced on Monday that Griffin wanted to move forward and open the door to others. It was his “desire to depart at a time of his choosing.”
“Anyone who knows Phil will understands that he has many interests and passions outside news -- and he is energized right now by the prospect of being able to participate in them professionally,” said Conde. “Even though COVID will -- for now -- prevent us from celebrating Phil in person (and exchanging his trademark high-fives), we will find the right ways to honor his NBC career, share stories, and wish him the best of luck in his next professional adventure. We have some time, as he has agreed to stay on through the end of January to ensure a smooth transition.”
As the senior vice president of NBC News and MSNBC, Rashida Jones oversaw coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 U.S. Elections, and helped NBC News’ Kristen Welker to moderate the final debate between President Donald J. Trump and former vice president, now President-elect Joe Biden.
“If you’ve worked with Rashida,” Conde said, “you know that she has an outstanding track-record and she leads with a laser-like focus and grace under pressure. I know she will be an excellent leader for MSNBC.”
Jones will be the first African American to lead a cable news network.
She will oversee the network which is going to be probably the “favorite” of Joe Biden.
Presidents usually have a cable network that prefer, George W. Bush was mostly a Fox News guy. Barack Obama was a CNN guy. Donald J. Trump was a Fox News guy but often touts Newsmax and OANN.
What will be Biden’s cable news preference?
