President-elect Joe Biden has picked Retired Four-Star General Lloyd J. Austin III to run the U.S. Department of Defense. If confirmed he will be the first African American to be honored with the role.

Sources confirm that Biden wants to diversify his administration by having 50% women, 50% men and he’s being pressured to add more African Americans, Asian American, Native Americans and Hispanic/Latinos to the top roles.

I mean he has a vice president who is a woman. For those who forgot who is Biden’s vice president, her name is Kamala Harris. The California senator is the Vice President-elect. She will be resigning from the Senate soon. Harris is the first Black woman, Asian woman and first woman to be the Vice President of the United States. She is the first woman of color to be in that position.

Austin, 67 would be the second former uniformed military commander to head the Defense Department in the last four years. The last person to serve this role was former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis who served only one year under outgoing president, Donald J. Trump.

Austin retired from the Army in 2016 as a four-star general and chief of Central Command (CENTCOM).

Austin was the top U.S. commanding general on the ground in Iraq during the major Obama-era troop drawdown, and Biden met with Austin when he visited Iraq in 2019.

Austin oversaw the removal of the U.S. forces and equipment from Iraq at the end of the year -- a massive logistical feat that Biden allies are likely to play up in the coming weeks as the Defense Department prepares to help distribute a COVID-19 vaccine.

CBS News reports that Austin will face hurdles from the left and the far-right. The former general was a member on the board of directors at defense contractor Raytheon. The leftists will complain about the military industrial complex with Austin.

Biden had floated other names before Austin. He was considering Michel Flournoy, a former undersecretary for defense policy touted by many Democrats as a qualified pick who would have been the first woman to lead the Defense Department.

Biden also considered former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson for the role of Defense Department. Johnson is African American.

Biden also considered Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a triple amputee who served in the Iraq War. She would have been the first Asian American woman to be in the role.
