American comic writer Tee Franklin was in Cincinnati for a comic convention. She and her driver were stopped by the law for parking in a restricted zone by a white employee. |
The driver came to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron, Kentucky.
The driver parked in a "no parking zone" to pick her up. An airport employee saw the vehicle in the red spot and decided to confront the driver and comic writer Tee Franklin.
In a video posted on social media, Franklin is witnessing an airport employee badgering her and the driver for parking in the red spot. She also hits at the right wing tabloid The Daily Mail for calling her an "angry Black woman."
Imagine the limo driver assigned to pick you up gets the cops called on him bc he parked BRIEFLY in a spot not a parking spot so it can be accessible for you. I just...— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 19, 2019
Welcome to Cincinnati?!?!
It took less than 2 minutes to get me in the car, but sure call the police so I couldn’t get in the car right at the curb. Extra ornery ass. pic.twitter.com/wuUGxfpnon— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 19, 2019
This video — which isn’t viral — ended up on The Daily Mail. They DM’d asking my permission to use said video & I didn’t respond. So I guess it didn’t matter. 😒 https://t.co/nbdfYVoJUV— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 20, 2019
1. @DailyMailUK I was NOT ANGERED there was no ramp for the panel. I was sad, disappointed, let down, frustrated, annoyed...not ANGERED.— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 20, 2019
2. Stop 👏🏾 calling 👏🏾 Black 👏🏾 woman 👏🏾 ANGRY 👏🏾 These racist stereotypes are harmful & must cease! pic.twitter.com/r1x65hgfXo
Two short sentences to describe a Black woman as angry @arielzilber, seems kinda racist to me. Wouldn’t y’all agree? What Black Woman hurt you?— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 20, 2019
I didn’t give permission. Sooo.... pic.twitter.com/c0rrknfC2q— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 20, 2019
I love how the ANGRY BLACK WOMAN posted the clip online to “shame” the fragile White woman.— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 20, 2019
BTW @arielzilber the woman was a MAINTENANCE WORKER, so you’re loud AND wrong. pic.twitter.com/yfrbsl9kwD
According to Franklin, the worker called the law when she noticed where the vehicle was parked.Hey @DailyMail @DailyMailUK your “journalist” @arielzilber made glaring errors in an article I didn’t give y’all permission to use my media in the first place.— TEE FRANKLIN @ CINCINNATI COMIC EXPO BOOTH 436 (@MizTeeFranklin) September 20, 2019
If you’re going to use my video at LEAST be accurate & stop with the micro aggressions
"Imagine the limo driver assigned to pick you up gets the cops called on him b/c he parked BRIEFLY in a spot not a parking spot so it can be accessible for you. I just..." Franklin wrote on her social media.
Franklin was scheduled to appear at the Cincinnati Comic Expo which is slated for the weekend.
Brief confrontation became tabloid de jour. Tee Franklin slams The Daily Mail for calling her an "angry Black woman." |
"All he was doing was just backing up to put the thing in there and that was that," she tells the attendant.
She also stated, "You're really making a mountain out of a molehill."
The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport Authority had no comment to the incident.
Franklin is a Black, queer, disabled comic book writer for Image Comics. She is the first Black woman to be hired by the company and hopes to pave the way for more marginalized comic creators.
She is the creator of the social media hashtag #BlackComicsMonth.
Franklin suffered a life altering injury in 2014. She was in a car accident and it left her permanently disabled and she has been using a mobility aid. She is from New Jersey.
