It appears that the rats are leaving the ship.
Pennsylvania's Republican senator is no longer seeking reelection in 2022. It may give Democrats a chance to win a crucial seat.
Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) is considered one of the "bridge to nowhere" types. He endorses destruction of forests, deregulation on environmental laws, eminent domain and freeways being built in Pennsylvania.
Toomey along with Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID) are the dirty boys. They don't care about the environment.
Toomey came into the Senate in 2011 after defeating Joe Sestak.
Sestak defeated incumbent senator Arlen Spector, a moderate Republican who deflected to the Democratic Party in order to give then-president Barack Obama a brief supermajority.
Toomey's rise came on the whims of the Tea Party. He was proven to be one of the weakest candidates running in 2016. But with Donald J. Trump's surprise victory against Hillary Clinton, Toomey as well as Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) managed to eek out victories.
Now in his second term as a U.S. Senator, Toomey is sticking to his promise of being a term limit type of lawmaker.
With Democratic governor Tom Wolf being term limited in Pennsylvania, the Republicans were hoping to recruit him as a potential contender in this important swing state. It seems like Toomey is not interested in that job of being governor.
Toomey announced he will no longer seek reelection after 2022. It is considered a major blow to the Republicans because they can't find a candidate strong enough to win this state. And by the way, no one wants Rick Santorum as their senator.
I will be making an announcement about my political future at 10:00 AM. You can watch live at the link below. https://t.co/zZWsOG23nW— Senator Pat Toomey (@SenToomey) October 5, 2020
New from @GovEdRendell and me for the @PhillyInquirer: 79% of Pennsylvanians support term limits. Term limits would allow members of Congress to operate knowing that they can take risks without jeopardizing a potential lifetime career. https://t.co/lXq6uAGrwK— Senator Pat Toomey (@SenToomey) October 6, 2020
He said that he wants to return to the Club for Growth or the private sector.
"I've made a decision, it's not going to change, and I want everybody to know."
With potential retirements looming in the next session, Democrats are eying North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and Florida as pick ups.
Given that Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) is the safest in 2022, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) might want to stack up their war chest. Democrats hope to beat these senators. Grassley is still on the fence about retirement. Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) is under federal watch and is likely to retire before he faces a federal indictment.
Toomey a staunch supporter of Donald J. Trump acted like he didn't know what the president tweeted or said on television and radio. He pretended like he's not involved in the daily routines of Trump.
Yet, he's voting for Trump's agenda. He is supporting Amy Coney Barrett after denying Merrick Garland a place on the Supreme Court.
When power is divided during an election year, the Senate’s general practice has been to leave open a SCOTUS vacancy so voters may resolve the disagreement...The circumstances surrounding the current vacancy are different. He has no legislative accomplishments. Yes, even the watered-down gun bill that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Toomey sponsored failed in the U.S. Senate shortly after five mass shootings (including the Sandy Hook Massacre).
Toomey is a Rust Belt senator. He appealed to white nationalists and poorly informed voters. Had they known he was a millionaire who supports they very things that keep the state in the shape is, he would have never been voted for.
