Smile, you're on camera. Jerry Falwell, Jr.'s latest antics forced Liberty University to cut ties with him. |
Falwell, Jr. is a prominent supporter of Donald J. Trump.
A photo of Falwell surfaced online showing him with his pants unzipped and his arms around a woman who isn't his wife. The picture was posted and deleted on social media. But someone managed to grab the picture and shared it online.
It went viral and the university which adhere to a strict code of conduct found Falwell violating the policies he championed. The policies call for students at Liberty to dress with appropriateness and modesty.
The Executive Committee of Liberty's University's Board of Trustees, acting on behalf of the full board have told Falwell that his position as President and Chancellor is suspended indefinitely and he was placed on leave. That basically meant that he was terminated but still maintains some weigh in decisions.
He immediately accepted the indefinite leave and stepped down on Friday.
The university did not explain what prompt the departure of Falwell but it did come on the heels of the image.
Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) is a pastor and former teacher at Liberty University. He said that the decision was right and Falwell should be removed from the campus.
Falwell tried to explain his actions on a local junk food media program. He said that he's trying to be a "good boy from here on out."
"You know it was weird, because she was, she's pregnant, she couldn't get her pants up, and I was, trying to like -- my, I had on a pair of jeans I haven't worn in a long time so I couldn't get mine zipped either," he said. "And so I just put my belly -- I just put my belly out like hers."
He called the woman in question, a "sweetheart." That is allegedly his wife's assistant.
Right!
Falwell's antics has placed a black eye on Liberty University. The school was founded by his father Jerry Falwell, Sr., a prominent white nationalist who gained infamy during the 1970s as a part of the Moral Majority. He along with televangelist and fellow right wing extremist Pat Robertson made millions swindling Christian worshippers.
