It's official President Barack Obama endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. After the brutal fight against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for the Democratic nomination, Clinton secured enough delegates to become the first woman in U.S. history to become the presumptive nominee of the party.
The president did a video for Clinton.
It also gave her boast in the polls. Right now, Clinton is leading Donald Trump by five points in most national polls. Although, it's still early, the slip-ups from Trump has given Clinton an advantage.
Also at the dinner, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) gave one of the most hardest attacks on Trump and her fellow senators who stall the president's nomination.
It's fueling speculation that Warren is being tapped to be the running mate. Warren stated that she's not interested....for now.
The president met with Sanders and had a formal discussion about his political future. Sanders for the most part said that he's staying in the race despite Clinton clinching the nomination.
Atlanta's codeine obsessed trap rapper is on fire. Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn (aka Future) got him three back to back number one albums. The DS2, What A Time To Be Alive and EVOL hit the charts and scored him a platinum deal.
Future is working with some of the biggest names in hip-hop.
We just reported that DJ Khaled is getting Jay-Z off the Lemonade to record a single with Future.
The rapper is working on his fifth album and it's going to be released in the Winter.
Future is currently signed to Epic Records. He credits L.A. Reid for giving him the opportunity to grow and vows to continue to make hits. One person he forgot to mention on his quest to greatness is the guy who gave him his start.
Future's humble beginnings started from the basement of Rodney Hill (aka Rocko). Future signed on to Rocko's label to make his debut mixtape 1000 and the follow up Dirty Sprite. The mixtapes were extremely successful and gave him name recognition. When he broke into the mainstream with his mixtapes, he was quickly signed to Epic to record his debut album Pluto.
Then after Pluto came Honest, then DS2, What A Time To Be Alive and EVOL.
Each of those album were recorded by Future through his A1 contract. But now that Future is trying to build his Freebandz label, it looks like Rocko is going to take him to court over this.
Rocko Dinero is feuding with Future Hendrix over the royalties.
According to TMZ, Rocko just sued Future citing a 2011 contract he believes he breached. He said that Future was to make his first six albums with A1 Records.
Rocko says Epic Records signed on to distribute the albums, but things got complicated. In the lawsuit, Future cut a side deal with Epic and it scored him multi-million dollar advances.
Rocko said that Future stiffed him out of the cut. The commission owed by Epic. Future is also facing a lawsuit over the touring, endorsements and album sales.
Did you expect this rap feud to happen? U.O.E.N.O....!
Note: Future is feuding with Desiigner. The rapper is proudly declaring that he's using Future's trademark flow. Desiigner's smash single Panda is gotten mainstream attention and it drove Future into addressing the rapper.
Future is feuding with the mother of his son Future Zahir. Pop singer Ciara was upset over allegations of the rapper cheating on her. They quickly called off an engagement and are fighting over child support. Future is asking for partial custody and lower support payments. Ciara is fighting for full custody and full payments. Ciara is dating Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks. They are planning on getting married in the late Fall.
Future is the father of five children. One of the children is from one of my closest cousins.
The Future HIVE is buzzing about the feud.
Real street nigga went to the court house, how did it feel when u signed the papers????😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
California Attorney General Kamala Harris will face Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) in an open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA). One of these women could be the state's first woman of color elected to Senate.
The California U.S. Senate race is going to be a bitter contest. However it's just going to be only one party doing all the fighting. California state attorney general Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) will face off in a U.S. Senate race for the open seat being vacated by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA).
Both candidates are Democrats and women of color. They are fighting for the seat and will court Democrats, Republicans and independents across the state for support.
Harris is from Oakland and is the daughter of Indian mother and Jamaican father. She was the District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011. She won the California race for Attorney General in 2010 and won reelection in 2014.
Sanchez is from Lynwood and the daughter of a Mexican immigrant. She is the current congresswoman from the 46th Congressional District. Her sister is Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) from the 38th Congressional District.
Both women are highly qualified and will be a historical first for the state. One of these candidates could become either the state's first woman of color elected to the U.S. Senate.
The Republicans by default lost the opportunity to win the seat. They have no viable candidate on the ticket.
Under California's nonpartisan blanket law, all candidates appear on the same ballot, regardless of party. In the primary voters may vote for any candidate, regardless of party, regardless of party affiliation. The top two finishers regardless of party will compete for the general election.
Washington state and Louisiana have similar races.
So it's going to be an ugly race despite it being two Democrats running.
With Harris being favored to win the race, Sanchez will have to court Republicans and independents to give her a momentum boost.
Perennial loser Carly Fiorina was the last Republican to run for the U.S. Senate seat against Boxer.
In 2010, Fiorina backed by the insurgency tried to uproot Boxer in a year when Republicans were confident enough to retake the U.S. Senate. She unsuccessfully ran for the seat.
In 2016 Fiorina would run for president. She ended that bid. She became the running mate for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). When Cruz ended his bid, she faded like fellow perennial loser Mitt Romney.
Fiorina became a historical first. Her days as a veep candidate was seven days. She goes down in history as one of the worst candidates to ever run for office.
Bernie Sanders is in this race. He pledges a contested convention.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is done. I hate to say this, but the presidential quest is over for the Vermont senator. I've supported him and voted for him in the Ohio primary. But it wasn't enough for him to beat his opponent former secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
His campaign is laying off staffers after the bruising California defeat. Hillary Clinton managed to seal the deal in California in a blowout. Conservatives were hoping that the Democrats will fight all the way to Philadelphia. Many in the junk food media and liberal agitators are calling for Bernie Sanders to stop and get behind the presumptive nominee.
The senator vows to stay in this race all the way to the Democratic Convention.
The Politico wrote a damning story about the senator's final days at a candidate. After the Ohio and Florida loss, Sanders was upset with Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Brown endorsed Clinton and helped her win the state overwhelmingly. Sanders also took pride in the attacks against Clinton.
His plans to go after her for the Clinton foundation and emails were on the table but he chose to stay focused on the issues.
The Nevada Democratic Convention was also a blow to his campaign. When his supporters started to threaten superdelegates and the chairwoman of the state, many Democrats believed that his campaign was going off the rails.
Now we're experience deja vu with Democrats again. Like the Barack Obama-Hillary Clinton battle, conservatives are seething for defecting. Bernies4Trump, BernieorBust, HillNO and other organizations are forming as I speak. The groups are Republican front groups.
Cause if you support Bernie Sanders and then turn to supporting Donald Trump, you're not a progressive. You're not a supporter of the Democrats. You're a troll who wants to rile up Democrats.
Republicans do have a mess on them. I mean they have a presumptive nominee who is more damaging than Clinton.
Republicans also have another issue on them. They're trying to stop the damage Donald Trump inflicted on himself. His politically divisive rhetoric has rattled Republicans and their donors.
Now the talk about a contested Republican Convention is being floated around again. Many Republicans are avoiding Cleveland because Trump's influence could inflict harm on their reelection campaign.
Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) was handed a bitter defeat after losing to Rep. George Holdings (R-NC) in a redistricting primary battle. Ellmers was under the radar for her alleged affair with Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). It didn't help that Ellmers wasn't around much in her district. Even Trump's endorsement of her fell flat. An even more conservative lawmaker defeated her in a bitter primary.
Rape suspect gets light sentence and the public is outraged.
There's controversy over the sentencing of an ex-Stanford swimmer who was found guilty of sexual assault. An Ohio man was sentenced in a California court for the charges. The charges were considered lenient by many in the junk food media.
Brock Turner is right now awaiting sentencing. He was sentenced to six months in the iron college, ten years of in-house and he will have to register as a TIER III for the rest of his life.
Turner was caught raping a woman who was intoxicated and some people noticed him getting it on behind a dumpster. When two men saw him, he took off. The woman was unconscious and partly clothed. The men caught Turner and held him until the law came.
Turner is appealing the decision. In the meantime, he is willing to serve his sentence at home.
Here's where the outrage begins. He is a privileged White man who got away with a very serious crime. Now he, his father and the judge are getting a slew of criticism and death threats.
And it's greatly deserved. There is a recall effort to take the judge out of power. He gave the sentence.
His father is facing flack for complaining about the sentence. He said that his son going to jail ruined his life for a mere "20 minutes of action".
The judge Aaron Persky handed Turner the lightest sentence ever imaginable. In the sentencing the judge said, "A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him. I think he will not be a danger to others."
The judge is an alumnus of Stanford University and that's giving the notion that it was I'll scratch your back, If you scratch mine.
Turner claims that the act was consensual but the victim denies that and feels that the judge ruined her life. She wrote a rebuttal saying that she can't live a normal life because of Turner. She gave up the booze and now hangs around her mom's home fearing the future.
Turner's weak charge brings up charges of racial injustice.
A former #BlackLivesMatter activist was sentenced to the iron college for four years for an alleged lynching charge. She was interfering with Pasadena Police as they were taking a suspect into custody and she got into a verbal confrontation with the law. She made a threat to the police and they arrested her for the crime. She was just found guilty on the charge. Richards is appealing the decision.
Jasmine Abdullah Richards was spared a four year bid. Many in the junk food media were criticizing the sentence because they felt that she was getting shafted by an obscure California law.
Looks like DJ Khaled got "another one" on the deck. It's a surprise collaboration on deck and it's gonna be a banger. Jay-Z and Future are going to be on a single together.
What?
Future getting into the studio with Jay-Z. It's the end of the world as we know it.
Atlanta's codeine obsessed trap rapper is working with the Jiggaman.
Future's producer Southside (Sizzle) of 808 Mafia spilled the beans on Shade45 over the weekend.
In an interview with DJ Whoo Kid of the Whoolywood Shuffle, Southside said that Khaled tapped him, Jake One and G-Coup to produce the "untitled" single. It will be released on Apple Music soon.
We the best...!
Khaled has a history of bringing huge names together, so the fact that he is involved makes the Future-Jay-Z pairing more believable. As does the fact that Jay-Z is now Khaled’s manager. This is not the first time Southside has offered a juicy bit of insider information re: Future. In November, he mentioned that Future was sitting on six albums and three mixtapes. (Fewtch has blessed the streets with one album and one mixtape since then.)
Southside mentions the Future-Jay-Z-Khaled single at the 3:30 mark below. The whole 20-minute interview is worth a listen — the Atlanta producer discusses his role in Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, how he and Waka Flocka changed the sonic landscape of hip hop, the time Kanye told him he was the future of music, and more.
Once again, if you are to get any singles or videos from Drake, Future, DJ Khaled, Eminem, Young Thug, Dr. Dre, and Wiz Khalifa you might have to purchase the singles from APPLE Music.
And of course if you get singles or videos from Jay-Z, Rihanna, Beyonce, Kanye West and Lil' Wayne you might have to purchase the singles from TIDAL.
As we mourn the loss of Muhammad Ali, World News Today announces the death of Kimbo Slice, the famed boxer and mixed martial artist passed away at the age of 42.
At first report by TMZ, Kimbo was being held on undisclosed conditions. They said that he was in a dire situation.
Born Kevin Ferguson, he was a Bahamian-born American mixed martial artist, boxer and occasional actor. He became famous for mutual combat street fights which were spread across the Internet, leading Rolling Stone to call him "The King of the Web Brawlers".
Slice left the underground fighting scene and signed a professional contract with EliteXC in 2007. Slice competed in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, where he lost in his first fight to series winner Roy Nelson. In his UFC debut, Slice defeated Houston Alexander in the The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights finale. From January 2015 until his death in June 2016, Slice was under contract to Bellator MMA.
Slice's death was confirmed by Mike Imber, his longtime manager.
"We lost our brother today," Imber said in a text message to The Associated Press.
The cause of death was still unclear. Kmiotek said there is no active police investigation, and no foul play is suspected.
Slice was a Bahamian-born ex-football player and strip club bouncer who began competing in unsanctioned street fights in 2003. Videos of his violent knockout victories in those bouts became wildly popular online, both for his punching power and his distinctive, intimidating appearance.
He studied MMA and eventually competed in several promotions, including the UFC and Bellator, which staged his two most recent fights.
Slice's death also was confirmed by Scott Coker, the CEO of Bellator, which promoted his return to MMA last year after a five-year absence. Slice beat Dhaffir "Dada 5000" Harris with a third-round knockout at Bellator 149 in February in Houston, but the result was overturned after Slice tested positive for steroid use.
"We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice," Coker said. "One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport. Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man. His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts."
Slice was scheduled to headline the Bellator 158 show in London next month in a bout against James Thompson.
American Top Team, the prominent South Florida gym where Slice trained for many years, also mourned his passing.
"The ATT Family and South Florida community lost a legend today," the team said in a post on its Twitter account.
Slice was the star of the first MMA show broadcast on network television, beating Thompson by third-round knockout in May 2008 on CBS with the defunct EliteXC promotion. With Slice and pioneering featherweight Gina Carano as the top attractions, EliteXC's two CBS shows drew big television ratings and introduced millions of viewers to MMA.
While he went 5-2 and never won a championship belt, Slice became one of MMA's best-known figures, attracting large television audiences and crowds to his growing sport. He also had a pro boxing career between stints in the cage, going 7-0 with six knockouts from 2011-13.
For all of his glowering in-cage swagger and viral fame, Slice was extraordinarily honest about his fighting abilities. He acknowledged being an MMA newcomer with much to learn about his new sport, never claiming to be anything but a big puncher providing for his family while constantly trying to learn the sport's other disciplines.
"The guys who are holding the titles, heavyweight and light heavyweight, these guys are awesome," Slice told the AP in a 2010 interview before his second UFC fight. "I'm really just having happy days in the midst — being among them, fighting on the undercards, just contributing to the UFC and the sport. That's really what I want to do. I'm not looking ahead to winning a title or anything like that. I'm just enjoying each fight as it comes."
Slice had six children, three boys and three girls. World News Today send our condolences to the family of Kimbo Slice. He will definitely be missed.
The first woman in U.S. history to be the nominee of her party. Hillary Clinton says that it's not over until the final primaries. Clinton is knocking Bernie Sanders out the park.
Yesterday, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton officially sealed the deal. She is the presumptive Democratic nominee and it's certainly pissed off her opponent U.S. senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
A first in U.S. history, a woman will represent a national party for president. Seems like the Democratic Party is the party of progress. The Democrats nominated and the American people elected twice the first Black president. Barack H. Obama was a senator from Illinois when he declared his bid for president in 2007. He was facing Hillary Clinton, then a senator from New York and former First Lady of the United States for the Democratic nomination.
It was one of the most fiercest primaries in the country. Of course, this is a fierce primary as well.
Sanders who's facing calls to end the race isn't going away. He believes that the superdelegates endorsing Clinton was a mistake and the progress is "rigged".
His stubbornness is also a factor to why this isn't going his way. He managed to push the Democrats further to the left.
The president is about to formally endorse Clinton after the six primaries.
President Barack Obama is eager to campaign. He believes that the focus on Congress being inept and Donald Trump's bombastic rhetoric are keys to helping the Democrats win back the senate and maybe the White House.
Republican Donald Trump is facing controversy after he singled out a judge for being a "Mexican".
Trump is facing a federal lawsuit for his defunct Trump University. He singled out Gonzalo P. Curiel for being a hater and wants his supporters to troll him. Of course, threatening a federal judge could land you in federal time out for years.
Republicans are calling for Trump to end the feud with Curiel. No signs of letting it go from the Trump campaign.
California, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, New Jersey, and New Mexico are today.
Clinton told her supporters that it's not over! She said that everyone continues to vote.
California and New Jersey are nail biters. Clinton leads by four against Sanders. Matter of fact, if she blowouts the six states, she will be the official nominee.
Right now, Clinton, Sanders and Trump are campaigning in each state to seal the deal.
Social media once again exposes a problem with people sharing services such as Uber, Lyft and now Airbnb.
Airbnb is under fire after members complain about alleged racism from the people who rent out their homes. It became a hashtag #Airbnbwhileblack started trending on social media and it prompt a response from the co-founders Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky.
The company helps people find and rent lodging. It has 1.5 million listings and operate in 34,000 cities and 190 countries.
A widely cited Harvard Business School study last year found "widespread discrimination" by Airbnb hosts against people with names that sounded distinctly black. And minority users who say their travel plans have been denied or canceled because of their race have rallied under the hashtag #AirbnbWhileBlack, appealing to the company to rein in a practice that was long ago outlawed in traditional hotels.
A woman was trying to rent a place from a guy in Charlotte, NC. The host named Todd Warner, got burned after ignored her request. The woman got her White female friend to rent the place. But when she called the host on the deliberate ignore, he posted on the woman's page that she's an UGLY NIGGER and he wouldn't rent his property to anyone who's Black.
He left a nice one "I hate NIGGERS, so I'm gonna cancel you. This is the south darling...find another place to rest your NIGGER head!"
The woman's friend Shani Taylor took her frustration to social media and it became the shot across the bow.
Soon other Black Airbnb users shared stories about how some of the host would look at them and void their contract. Some would have to recruit their White friends to engage in orders.
And the most infamous incident came into play when an interracial couple. Victoria Yore and her boyfriend Terrence Drysdale were shutdown after she puts a picture of them together.
When Victoria put her old profile picture on Airbnb, it got attention. The moment she posted her picture with Terrance, they would ignore the requests. They often traveled around the world because he's a professional photographer and she's a model.
They brought this to attention last month and since it's taken off, the president of the company spoke out against any of hosts discriminating against their clients.
Brian Chesky said from this point, anyone who denies any of the guests on the grounds of race, sexuality, nationality, religion and social status will be removed.
Sanders could end up being labeled a "sore loser" if he continues to fight to the convention.
Many in the junk food media have finally had enough of the Democratic primaries. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are at the end of the road. Some of the junk food media is now focusing on Clinton and her challenger Republican Donald Trump.
This will be a historical first. Two candidates from the mainstream parties being highly unpopular among the registered voters.
Their negatives will eventually drop now that it's likely Clinton and Trump will be the nominees of their respective parties.
Clinton who is close to securing the nomination can't get rid of Sanders.
Sanders says he vows to fight all the way to the convention. Many analysis are probably saying that's mostly bluster coming from Sanders. They don't believe he'll carry forth knowing he's out of money.
The polls in New Jersey and California are tightening and it seems like Clinton is leading. If she wins in the California primary it's over for Bernie Sanders.
Right now Puerto Rico's Democratic primary was a blowout for Clinton. The U.S. territory (commonwealth) is struggling and Congress is still inept. Sanders is a part of the inept Congress as a member of the U.S. Senate.
Sanders, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio are relatively unaccomplished senators. Name one sponsored legislation by the four. They haven't done really much since they decided to run for president. At least on the bright side, Sanders calls upon a vote for Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.
Puerto Ricans aren't thrilled that Congress keeps punting the bailout. The territory is facing a $204 billion debt and the territory could default on its debt. Many Puerto Ricans may eventually call for independence if the United States government decides to leave the island hanging. Even Sanders called for independence. A bad move on his part because that upsets party leaders and it gives the notion that Sanders is inconsistent on issues.
Clinton who enjoys high support from the Hispanic/Latino supporters got the vote in.
Sanders and Cruz got attention for fighting against the status quo.
The status quo isn't keen on them so they rallied around Trump and Clinton. Yeah, they're negatives are high, but damnit, the two are viable than the rest.
I voted for Bernie and I am proud to do so.
But it's not worth fighting for if Clinton won the popular vote and capture the delegates. The Superdelegates will be around regardless of the complaints.
Clinton made the mistake of complaining about the superdelegates when she was trailing against Barack Obama.
The junk food media (especially conservative agitators) were hoping that Clinton supporters would not support Barack Obama for president. They were playing the Clintons4McCain, P.U,M.A. and NoBama nonsense.
Now it's Berns4Trump, BernieorBust, or BernieBros. Deja Vu.
I'm not surprise they're calling for a third party bid. Sanders would violate his agreement and wouldn't be eligible on many ballots if he mounts a third party bid.
That's like the Republicans and establishment folks saying that David French has a chance to stop Trump. Or even perennial loser Mitt Romney. Not happening.
Like it or not, Trump and Clinton are the nominees. Both are seriously flawed. Both are negative.
Clinton will face accusations of racism, attacks on her gender and accusations of criminal misconduct. Republicans will continue to throw stones at glass houses by going after Bill Clinton's affairs. They will probably try to label Clinton a third term of Barack Obama or Bill Clinton. They will drive the stories of her emails and Benghazi to the depths of hell.
Trump will face accusations of racism and sexism. He will be questioned on shady business deals, his television career and Trump University. The Democrats will continue to bring a knife to a gunfight by calling his supporters idiots and bigots. They will try to tie Trump to Ted Cruz, Neo-Nazi David Duke, that old fart Rush Limbaugh, Softball Hannity, Screwball Alex Jones and Barry Goldwater. Trump's Muslim ban, That Black Guy remark and HUGE wall over Mexico will be used to rile up non-White voters. They will drag this through the depths of hell as well.
Plain clothes NYPD officer in the freezer after she snatched a citizen's camera and unlawfully arrested him.
Patrick Lynch, the racist police union leader of the NYPD will try to defend the actions of a female sergeant who pointed her firearm at a man recording her arresting another man in the hallway of Brooklyn apartment.
Diana Pichardo is in the freezer pending a disciplinary hearing. She was filmed berating David Rivera and then arresting him after he was saying it's his constitutional right to film officers while on duty.
He also had surveillance cameras in his home. It recorded the NYPD doing a warrantless search of his home.
When David released it to the junk food media and social media, the Brooklyn district attorney dropped the felonious assault and disorderly conduct charges.
On top of that Pichardo has a history with unnecessary roughness. The NYPD had to do an apology tour after an incident in which she's under federal watch. She was a defendant in a federal probe that cost the city of New York $400,000.
This was unacceptable.
For 13 years, Pichardo (known by her underlings as Pocahontas) was running Brooklyn's Coney Island. She took her job way too seriously.
David said to the New York Daily News, that he was watching a movie with his girlfriend when he heard a noise outside his door. So as expected, he steps out and see a group of men and women wrestling with a man. So he grabs his cell phone and records the confrontation.
As women were screaming, Pichardo rushes in between them and then points her gun at David.
David said "Don't point that gun at me!". The cops ordered David to back to his apartment. He still records when an officer ordered him to close the door. He said, "Don't close my door! I'm inside my apartment, you have no right to shut my door!" After a brief engagement with a plain clothes officer, Pichardo confronts David and calls him a motherfucker and takes his camera. After a brief engagement of verbal, David was then arrested and sat in the lockup for 43 hours without being charged.
He plans on filing a complaint and hopes that she loses her badge after this event.
Memphis Police mourns the death of an officer killed in a deadly hit and run. The suspect was caught. Guess who will get the blame?
The city of Memphis is mourning the death of one of their own. This is tragic because the officer was killed in the Beale Street entertainment district after observing an incident.
The officer was responding to an active shooter when I guess he confronted him. The shooter revved up the car and sped into him.
The suspect was later caught but the damage was done. The suspect killed a 18 year officer on the Memphis Metro PD.
Of course, the blame game will be front and center yet again. No telling who may get the blame but obviously, Barack Obama or #BlackLivesMatter will be mentioned.
So here's the poll.
Suspect involved in Memphis police officer's deadly hit/skip incident caught. Who gets the blame for this tragedy?
CNN reports that officer Verdell Smith, 46, was fatally struck downtown on Saturday night, Memphis Police Department Director Mike Rallings said.
The string of violence started with back-to-back shootings that left three people injured.
Two men were critically wounded in a shooting at Westy's restaurant at about 10 p.m., Rallings said. Minutes later, an employee at the nearby Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid was also shot but not critically wounded.
The suspect, 21-year-old Justine Welch, fled in a car, MPD spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Rudolph said. Police lost him on nearby Interstate 55.
But he later returned to the scene, where officers were working to clear the area. That's when Welch struck and killed Smith, police said.
This is the most recent picture of Memphis officer Verdell Smith. He posted on Google+ about how to help Memphis youth overcome violence.
Welch is charged with first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, evading arrest, theft of property over $10,000, vehicular homicide and reckless driving, Rudolph said.
"I am angry this morning -- angry at the senseless loss of a dedicated public servant, and angry at the absolutely unacceptable level of violence in our city," Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement Sunday.
"We must not accept this as our norm. I most certainly will not, and I will continue to act to make our city safer."
The mayor asked every Memphis resident "to remember Officer Smith's family in prayer and reflection today and in the coming days -- and to be grateful for the dangerous, important work our men and women of MPD perform every day."
Memphis Police lost over ten officers in the past decade.
Smith is survived by his father, fiance and three children, CNN affiliate WMC reported.
Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams said Smith was an excellent officer and father.
"He loved his son -- always talked about him, always had him with him," Williams told WMC. "I think his son is taking it really, really hard. He (Smith) had two daughters as well."
World News Today of course have sympathy for those in law enforcement. I understand that those in law enforcement face dangers every day. It's a thankless job. The only way they get recognition is when the media covers them. Regardless of the positive or negative, a police officer's job is to serve and protect the citizens of their jurisdiction.
World News Today send our condolences to Verdell Smith's family. We also send our prayers to the victims of the senseless gun violence that occurred before Verdell's death.
Welch is innocent until proven guilty. He could face LIFE in the iron college if found guilty of these charges. Tennessee has a DEATH card. If he was the the alleged shooter in the earlier violence, he could be facing that fate if the victims die.
