I heard about this on Wednesday that a famous philanthropist's wife was killed in a home invasion.
The Los Angeles Times had gave a brief report about incident and arrest.
The legendary Clarence Avant lost his wife to a deadly home invasion where a man entered the home and shot her dead. The suspect is caught and is facing charges.
Jacqueline Avant was fatally shot inside her home and it has sparked outrage at the suspect and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department. The police were aware of these spikes in home robbery. Given that one entertainer by the name of Pop Smoke died from a home invasion.
Officers responded to a call of a shooting in the 1100 block of Maytor Place shortly before 2:30 a.m., according to Lt. Giovanni Trejo of the Beverly Hills Police Department. They found Avant, 81, with a gunshot wound.
She was taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where she later died, Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook said during a news conference Wednesday.
It is too soon to classify the incident as a home invasion or a follow-home robbery, Stainbrook said, but he did not think it was a “random attack.”
Her husband is a legendary figure in the music industry, working with or advising such stars as Jimmy Smith, Lalo Schifrin, Babyface, Bill Withers, Sixto Rodriguez, the SOS Band and Cherrelle.
Known as the “Black Godfather,” he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
CBS News reported that the suspect, 29 is responsible for fatally shooting the philanthropist in her home in the wealthy neighborhood of Trousdale early Wednesday. The suspect has an extensive criminal record and was out on parole, according to police.
Just one hour after Avant was killed, police responded to another shooting at a home in nearby Hollywood, where they located the suspect.
"He was in the house and collecting property and then after that somehow discharged a weapon and apparently shot himself in the foot," said Blake Chow, LAPD's deputy chief. "Somewhere in the night, we had an astute watch commander of Hollywood that started to put two and two together and reached out to Beverly Hills, and there were some similarities."
Those similarities included the getaway vehicle that was caught on surveillance video heading toward Hollywood and an AR-15-style rifle found at the second scene that detectives believe was used to kill Avant.
The suspect accidently shot himself as he was trying to enter a property. So now he's in the hospital being treated for his injuries. He will be arraigned in court by the end of the week.
Detectives haven't had a chance to talk with the suspect and don't have a motive for the killing.
On Thursday, the family of the philanthropist and former runway model expressed gratitude to law enforcement and said in a statement, "Now let justice be served."
The suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
