A son of Searchlight, Nevada, Harry never forgot his humble roots. A boxer, he never gave up a fight. A great American, he looked at challenges and believed it was within our capacity to do good — to do right.

May God bless Harry Reid, a dear friend and a giant of our history.
When Harry Reid was nearing the end, his wife Landra asked some of us to share letters that she could read to him. In lieu of a statement, here’s what I wrote to my friend: pic.twitter.com/o6Ll6rzpAX

Our country has lost an honorable public servant. Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid always fought for working families and the poor. Leader Reid was kind, generous, and always to the point. Landra and the entire Reid family are in our thoughts. pic.twitter.com/9dE1FY7p9i

Harry Reid was one of the most amazing individuals I've ever met

He never forgot where he came from and used those boxing instincts to fearlessly fight those who were hurting the poor & the middle class
He’s gone but will walk by the sides of many of us in the Senate every day pic.twitter.com/8T9PiD7vY4
Harry Reid was a dedicated public servant and a truly one-of-a-kind U.S Senator. My full statement: https://t.co/loVCu8lVZd

The former Senate Majority and later Minority Leader, Harry Reid has passed away.
President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Obstructionist Leader Karen McConnell (R-KY) and the members of the Senate were notified of his passing.
The former Nevada senator fought pancreatic cancer for four years before succumbing to it.
"I am heartbroken to announce the passing of my husband, former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid," said Landra Gould Reid, the late senator's wife.
"He died peacefully this afternoon, surrounded by our family, following a courageous, four-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Harry was 82 years old. We were married for 62 years."
Reid spent over 30 years as the senator from the state of Nevada. He served as Senate Majority Leader from 2017 until 2015. He had some time as the Senate Minority Leader when the Democrats lost control of the Senate.
Former president Barack Obama also led in the tributes to one of the hardest fighters for democracy.
As vice president, Joe Biden relied on Harry Reid to get the Democrats to pass Obama's agenda. |
"You were a great leader in the Senate, and early on you were generous to me than I had any right to expect," Obama wrote on social media. "I wouldn't have been president had it not been for your encouragement and support and I wouldn't have got most of what I got done without your skill and determination."
The Senate leaders Schumer and McConnell reacted to the passing of their longtime friend.
Reid had a started as a member of the Nevada Assembly before becoming the 25th Lieutenant Governor of the state of Nevada and later a chair of the Nevada Gaming Commission. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and served as a member for two terms.
He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986 and served the senate for 30 years. He had to retire after a fall injured his eye and left him partially blind. He also remained a valued voice to Obama and Biden until his final days.
Reid grew up in Searchlight, Nevada. He had a stint as an amateur boxer before entering politics.
The city of Las Vegas dedicated their airport after him. The Harry Reid Las Vegas International Airport is located in boomburg neighborhood of Paradise.
