Barbados is officially removed as a sovereign nation under the British crown. As of today, the nation of Barbados is an independent country. It has formally said that it no longer associates with colonialism.

Queen Elizabeth II, 95 was considered the head of state. That ends as of today.

She had offered congratulations and wished the country well on their future. In a letter to the new president Sandra Mason, formerly the governor-general, the monarch and the United Kingdom look forward to working with the country in future endeavors.

"On this significant occasion and your assumption of office as the first president of Barbados, I extend my congratulations to you and all Barbadians," the Queen wrote.

"Over the years, our countries have enjoyed a partnership based on common values, shared prosperity, and close collaboration on a wide range of issues, including recent work on climate change," she continued. "It is also a source of great satisfaction that Barbados remains an active participant within the Commonwealth, and I look forward to the continuation of the friendship between our two countries and peoples."

The Queen ended her note with "warmest wishes," writing, "As you celebrate this momentous day, I send you and all Barbadians my warmest good wishes for your happiness, peace and prosperity in the future," and signing the letter, "Elizabeth R."  

Barbados first gained independence from Britain in 1966. The nation announced in September that they would be removing Queen Elizabeth as head of state, and ended nearly 400 years of British rule Monday, according to The New York Times. 

Prince Charles was in attendance to speak on behalf the Queen. He remarked that Barbados had been part of the slave trade and formally apologized for the atrocities committed in the past.

During his speech, Charles pointed to Britain's role in the slave trade and the country's part in trafficking people from Africa, Barbados and the Caribbean, telling attendees, "From the darkest days of our past, and the appalling atrocity of slavery, which forever stains our history, the people of this island forged their path with extraordinary fortitude."

RiRi a national hero.

He added, "Emancipation, self-government and independence were your way-points. Freedom, justice and self-determination have been your guides. Your long journey has brought you to this moment, not as your destination, but as a vantage point from which to survey a new horizon."

Barbadian media mogul Rihanna is hailed a national hero in the country. The entertainer is worth $1.5 billion. She is one of the richest women in the United States.

Before her, top Barbadian government officials encouraged her to join them at a crucial moment in her nation’s history.

"You can come my dear," Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley told the multi-Grammy winner.

Rihanna had just been declared a national hero by the Barbadian government and bestowed with a title,
"the right excellent," as the island bade farewell to Queen Elizabeth II as head of state and celebrated becoming a republic for the first time in history.

"On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero of Barbados, Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty," the prime minister said. "May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honor to your nation by your words, by your actions, and to do credit wherever you shall go. God bless you, my dear."

Rihanna raised her palm to her heart as she stood next to Mottley and said thank you before they walked offstage and briefly put their arms around each other.

Before Rihanna sat down again, she greeted several people, including Prince Charles.

On Wednesday, the singer was officially honored in a separate ceremony where she received a large medal emblazoned with the outline of Barbados and blew a kiss to the cheering crowd.

"This is a day that I will never, ever forget. It’s also a day that I never saw coming," she said in a brief speech in which she encouraged the youth to continue pushing Barbados forward. "I have traveled the world and received several awards and recognitions, but nothing, nothing compares to being recognized in the soil that you grew in."
