Last year, Joe Morrow had the police called on him, was handcuffed & accused of being “threatening” after US Bank FALSELY suspected the 23yo of trying to cash a fake check! He was treated like a criminal for NO reason! US Bank needs to be held accountable! #BankingWhileBlack pic.twitter.com/UGqyP2NWnb

Banking while Black. Joe Morrow, 23, was arrested at his local bank for trying to cash his paycheck. The US Bank manager thought the paycheck was fake, so called the police. The teller had told Morrow, “you people always try to cash fake checks”. The check was real. pic.twitter.com/lM9EcOcfpn

In the wake of the George Floyd murder, many Black Americans shared their experiences of racism. In the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, it's no different. The loss of Floyd, sparked demands for accountability towards those who call the police on Black people. Those police officers who abuse their powers in protecting the community. Lawmakers who refuse to move the ball on gun violence, police violence and racism. A man was arrested after he tried to cash a $900 check at U.S. Bank in Minnesota. The branch manager and staff claimed that his check was bogus and they called the law on him.
The cop arriving did not make the incident any better. He rushed to judgment and made the accusations of the man being guilty and told him to shut his mouth when he tried to explain the check being legitimate.
Joe Morrow Tried to Cash HIS LEGITIMATE Paycheck at a bank in MN. The bank Mgr John Askwith, a true a$$hole & apparently spawned by hyenas wrongfully accused Mr Morrow of having a fake check & called a cop that needs training on the constitution. https://t.co/u3lFLwE86V pic.twitter.com/0Zr1lntino

Joe Morrow was a loyal member of U.S. Bank. He entered the bank with his $900 check to cash it in.
The Columbia Heights, Minnesota Police also are doing doing damage control after one of its officers made the situation worse by not de-escalating the situation. Sgt. Justin Pletcher approached Morrow "I need you to calm, down.... Don't say anything stupid 'cause you're just going to get arrested for it...!"
The whole ordeal led to him soon being detained and handcuffed. He was placed into another office while the cops talked to the bank manager. The bank manager, John Askwith would finally call the UNFI company to confirm the check.
When he was released from custody, Pletcher made the claim that "folks" had pushed out fake checks in the past and told him that acting upset makes him look guilty. It was the experience that Morrow was frustrated with.
He would file a complaint with the city's police and demand the U.S. Bank apologize. After the news hit the fan, the bank quietly paid out Morrow an undisclosed amount and told him to not talk about it.
But since the local junk food media in the Twin Cities got a hold of the body camera footage, the bank finally apologized though its CEO.
The company hasn't fired the bank manager, the police haven't discipline the officer and Morrow is left wondering if he was a "white guy" he wouldn't been treated like that.
However, he explains that he felt that the bank racially profiled him. The bank manager
