John Bel Edwards continues on. He gets his second term. |
The victory of incumbent governor John Bel Edwards comes as a blow to Donald J. Trump. The imbecile was hoping that the Republican nominee Eddie Rispone trounced Bel Edwards in the run-off. Trump made three appearances during the final days.
Republicans managed to sweep in the lower chamber and state attorney general position.
The governor's seat was the most crucial. Because in 2020, Republicans were hoping to control the redistricting lines for at least 10 years.
This is the second time that a Democrat won a state that Trump carried in the 2016 election.
Trump's last ditch effort to help GOP nominee win his gubernatorial election failed. |
So basically the polls were really neck-and-neck.
Edwards has a 58% job approval in the state. That was clearly a sign he was favorite to win despite the Trump and Republican Party attacks. You know it was a wash when the far-white agitators (i.e. Rush Limbaugh, Sean "Softball" Hannity, Mark Levin and Tucker Carlson) spend no time mentioning the race.
Trump was hoping to get the seat back in the GOP's hands but a surge in anti-Trump resentment and black voter turnout helped boost Edwards to the finish line.
In his victory speech, he spoke with the words, "How sweet it is!"
He also took aim at Trump for his relentless attacks on his character.
"And as for the president, 'God bless his heart.' Tonight the people of Louisiana have chosen to chart their own parth,' Edwards said in his victory speech.
Edwards pulled the state out of fiscal emergency. Many Republicans blame the failed legacy of former Louisiana governor Piyush "Bobby" Jindal.
Edwards had stabilized state finances with a series of tax increases. He got new money for investments in public colleges and the state teachers got a decent raise.
He also expended the Medicaid program and it lowered the state's uninsured rate below the national average.
He isn't without controversy. He signed off the closing of emergency facilities for women's health.
Edwards signed off the so-called "Blue Lives Matter" legislation which makes it criminal act if you are threatening law enforcement.
Rispone wanted to paint himself like Trump. He said that he wanted to be a "conservative outsider."
Again, this talk about being a conservative is not going to help win votes. It's about policies. Despite this state going to Trump by 45 points, the state stuck with its governor because he focused on issues that matter to the state.
Democrats claim Kentucky and Louisiana.
It caused Trump to have discomfort. The stress is getting to him.
