There is a major shakeup in the Trump White House.President Donald J. Trump fires his Defense secretary out of the cannon.
Department of Defense secretary Mark Esper has submitted his letter of resignation.
Esper had clashed with Trump when it came to issues like stripping military bases of Confederate names and taking the threats from Russia seriously.
Three current defense officials said that the Defense secretary has proposed a letter of resignation on Wednesday.
It was expected that regardless of Trump winning or losing, he was considering firing Esper, CIA chief Gina Hapsel, FBI director Christopher Wray and possibly Attorney General William Barr.
Trump has even considered firing infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Esper was helping members of Congress draft legislation that will strip names of Confederate leaders which led to the fallout with Trump.
Esper considered ordering a directive that would order the secretaries of Army, Navy and Air Force to change the names in their respective services -- an order that could be overturned by Trump, who strongly opposed renaming bases -- he now plans to work with Congress to put language in the annual National Defense Authorization Act so the names changes will be written into law.
Ten bases are named after Confederate military leaders. They include: Fort Hood, Fort Bragg, Fort Benning, Fort Gordon, Fort Lee, Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Polk, Fort Rucker, the Virginia National Guard post Fort Pickett and Louisiana National Guard’s Camp Beauregard.
Esper allegedly disagreed with Trump over the ban of transgender military officials as well.
Trump has reimposed a ban on transgender Americans in the military.
Shake ups are happening despite the uncertainty of the election results.
Don’t forget that Esper is a part of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This is probably the biggest domestic and international crisis facing the United States.
