The city of St. Louis, Missouri, elected its first woman of color to be mayor.

Tishaura Jones will be sworn in as mayor of St. Louis on April 20. She will be the first African American woman to be mayor of the second largest city and the city many call "The Gateway to The West."

St. Louis sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. It has a population of 304,000 residents.

Jones, the current city treasurer defeated Cara Spencer, the 20th Ward alderwoman in a non-partisan race to be the mayor of the only independent city in Missouri.

Jones makes history by being a Black woman who will oversee a racially divided city.

Jones, a Democrat will focus on reforms with the city's jail. The recent incident where interns at the city lockup had caused an uprising. The interns are complaining about the COVID-19 spread, the lack of proper water, terrible conditions with food and an infestation of rats and roaches. The set their mattresses on fire and demanded that they are giving due process.

They call upon white nationalist Republican Gov. Mike Parson to fix the mess. Jones wants to work with city jailers and city officials to fix the problems with the jail. But she also wants Parson to do something about it from the state level.

She will have to deal with a high crime and murder rate in the city. St. Louis is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. She will have to work with community leaders and the police to control the matter.
A city divided. Tishaura Jones must patch things up.

She will have to fix the city's economy. The city is losing revenue, population and faces potential for bankruptcy.

Jones said in her victory speech that she will fight racism and injustice plaguing the city.

"We have constantly increased our police budget over the last several decades and crime keeps getting worse," she said. "We cannot keep throwing money at the same thing and expect different results."

"I will not stay silent when I spot racism. I will not stay silent when I spot homophobia and transphobia. I will not stay silent when I spot xenophobia. I will not stay silent when I spot religious intolerance. I will not stay silent when I spot injustice."

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) who won her election in 2020 and defeated W. Lacy Clay in the Democratic Primary congratulates Jones on her victory.

"It's a new day in St. Louis, and Black women are leading the way. Congratulations Mayor Tishaura Jones. Let's get to work."
