Malcolm-Jamal Warner passed away from an accidental drowning in Costa Rica.
Growing up I was that Black kid watching that famous sitcom with the Black family.
This one hurts.
Me and La Reyna got the news that Malcolm-Jamal Warner has passed away from a drowning while with his family in Costa Rica.
This will reach a lot of celebrities. Of course, former vice president Kamala Harris, former president Barack Obama and Michelle Obama will react.
The Cosby Show, A Different World and Malcolm & Eddie cast will react.
No word yet from Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen, Sabrinaa Le Beauf, Lisa Bonet, Tempest Bledsoe, Keisha Knight Pulliam, Raven-Symone, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer, Karen Malina White, Jasmine Guy or Kardeem Hardison.
Eddie Griffin did react to the news.
Expect their reactions soon.
Best known for playing Theodore Aloysius "Theo" Huxtable, Jamal-Warner gained a reputation as the semi-rebellious but spirited only son of Cliff and Clair Huxtable.
If you're Black and grew up in the 1980s or early 1990s, you watched The Cosby Show.
Warner grew up with the role.
From a 13 year old kid to 24 year old man.
He also had cameo appearances on the spinoff A Different World.
Outside the Cosby universe, Malcolm-Jamal was the star of his own show with comedian Eddie Griffin. The show Malcolm & Eddie, a Black version of The Odd Couple was on UPN for four seasons. Malcolm also did voice roles in animation and poetry.
He died at 54 in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica, authorities there said Monday.
Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department said Warner drowned Sunday afternoon on a beach on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. He was swimming at Playa Cocles in Limon province when a current pulled him deeper into the ocean.
“He was rescued by people on the beach,” the department’s initial report said, but first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs and he was taken to the morgue.
Warner created many TV moments etched in the memories of Generation X children and their parents, including a pilot-episode argument with Cosby about grades and careers, and another episode where Theo tries in vain to hide his ear piercing from his dad.
Theo was the only son among four daughters in the household of Cosby’s Cliff Huxtable and Phylicia Rashad’s Clair Huxtable on the NBC sitcom, and he would be one of the prime representations of American teenage life and Black boyhood on a show that was the most popular in America for much of its run from 1984 to 1992.
Warner worked for more than 40 years as an actor and director, also starring in the sitcoms “Malcolm & Eddie” and “Read Between the Lines,” and in the medical drama “The Resident.”
You felt family when you watched The Cosby Show. Bill Cosby played the lovable father Cliff Huxtable. He and wife Clair were raising five children in an upscale Greenwich Village home. Malcolm-Jamal Warner played Theo, the rebellious but kind hearted son.
His final credits came in TV guest roles, including a dramatic four-episode arc last year on the network procedural “9-1-1,” where he played a nurse who was a long-term survivor of a terrible fire.
“I grew up with a maniacal obsession with not wanting to be one of those ‘where are they now kids,’” Warner told The Associated Press in 2015. “I feel very blessed to be able to have all of these avenues of expression ... to be where I am now and finally at a place where I can let go of that worry about having a life after ‘Cosby.’”
He played Theo Huxtable for eight seasons, appearing in each of the 197 episodes of “The Cosby Show” and earning an Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a comedy in 1986.
Actor Viola Davis was among those giving tribute Monday.
“Theo was OUR son, OUR brother, OUR friend. He was absolutely so familiar, and we rejoiced at how TV got it right!!”, The Oscar winner said on Instagram. “But Malcolm got it right ... we reveled in your life and are gutted by this loss.”
The Cosby legacy
Like the rest of the “Cosby Show” cast, Warner had to contend with the sexual assault allegations against its titular star, whose conviction in a Pennsylvania court was later overturned.
Warner told the Associated Press in 2015 that the show’s legacy was “tarnished.”
“My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of color on television and film,” Warner said. “We’ve always had ‘The Cosby Show’ to hold up against that. And the fact that we no longer have that, that’s the thing that saddens me the most because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairy tale.”
Representatives for Cosby declined immediate comment.
Life after Theo
Warner’s first major post-"Cosby” role came on the sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie,” co-starring with comedian Eddie Griffin in the popular series on the defunct UPN network from 1996 to 2000.
“My heart is heavy right now,” Griffin said on Instagram Monday. “Rest easy my brother for you have Won in life and now you have won forever eternal bliss..”
In the 2010s, he starred opposite Tracee Ellis Ross as a family-blending couple for two seasons on the BET sitcom “Read Between The Lines.” He also had a role as O.J. Simpson’s friend Al Cowlings on “American Crime Story” and was a series regular on Fox’s “The Resident.”
Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Eddie Griffin starred in Malcolm & Eddie. They were young Black men who sought to become entrepreneurs while being distracted by women and one another's antics.
“First I met you as Theo with the rest of the world then you were my first TV husband,” Ross said on Instagram. “My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant.”
Warner’s film roles included the 2008 rom-com “Fool’s Gold” with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. A poet and a musician, Warner was a Grammy winner, for best traditional R&B performance, and was nominated for best spoken word poetry album for “Hiding in Plain View.”
Warner also worked as a director, helming episodes of “Malcolm & Eddie,” “Read Between the Lines,” “The Resident” and “All That.”
An actor’s childhood
Warner, named after Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, was born in 1970 in Jersey City, New Jersey. His mother, Pamela Warner, served as his manager when he began pursuing acting at age 9.
In the early 1980s, he made guest appearances on the TV shows “Matt Houston” — his first credit — and “Fame.”
Warner was 13 when he landed the role of Theo in an audition after a broad search for the right child actor.
Cosby was a major star at the time, and the show was certain to be widely seen, but few could’ve predicted the huge phenomenon it would become.
For many the lasting image of Theo, and of Warner, is of him wearing a badly botched mock designer shirt sewed by his sister Denise, played by Lisa Bonet. The “Gordon Gartrell” shirt later became a memeable image: Anthony Mackie wore one on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon and the profile picture on Warner’s Instagram shows a toddler sporting one.
Warner would develop a love-hate relationship with the character.
“Theo was very good to me. And I think that show and that role is timeless. And I’m very proud of that role,” Warner said in a recent podcast interview, while noting that he’d tried to separate himself from the role and for years would recoil when fans addressed him as Theo.
“Part of the distancing for me is not wanting to see how much of Malcolm is in Theo. I remember doing the show and I always thought that Theo is corny. I want Theo to be cooler,” he told Melyssa Ford on her “Hot & Bothered” podcast. “Somebody called me America’s favorite white Black boy. And I was 15. ... It hurt me. ... That’s cultural trauma.”
Warner was married with a young daughter, but chose to not publicly disclose their names. His representatives declined immediate comment on his death.
The former lead singer from the one time group City High has passed away.
Robbie Pardlo has passed away at the age of 47.
Robbie Pardlo, Ryan Toby and Claudette Ortiz were a New Jersey based group that made the one hit wonder song, "What Would You Do?" which reached No. 8 on the Billboard Top Ten in 2001.
The group released their self titled debut and soon broke up after the release.
A representative for Pardlo tells TMZ that the artist was surrounded by family and friends in his hometown of Willingboro before he died July 17. They did not share a cause of death.
Pardlo was 46.
City High is known for the 2001 hit song “What Would You Do?”
Pardlo was originally a solo artist before teaming with Ryan Toby (“Sister Act 2″) and singer Claudette Ortiz, who he had dated at Willingboro High School. Toby was also an alum of the school.
Toby and Ortiz have briefly married and have two children. Ortiz has a child from another relationship.
City High signed to Interscope Records through Booga Basement, the label run by Newark and East Orange’s Wyclef Jean and his cousin Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis.
The Jean and Wonda-produced “What Would You Do?” talks about poverty, sex work, drugs and child sexual abuse.
Two years before charting, it was also included on the soundtrack to the 1999 movie “Life” starring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence.
City High.
The second single from City High’s first and only album was “Caramel” featuring Philadelphia rapper Eve, released Sept. 11, 2001. The song reached No. 18 on the Hot 100.
City High broke up in 2003. Ortiz and Toby married in 2004 and divorced in 2007. They have two sons.
Pardlo was also a member of the R&B quartet First Take.
Before City High’s big success, he sang backup alongside Toby on the 1999 Whitney Houston song “My Love is Your Love,” which rose to No. 4 on the Billboard chart.
Pardlo is survived by his wife Anika Pardlo; his children Lyric and Chord-Andrew Pardlo; his mother Marion Pardlo; brother Gregory Pardlo, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet (“Digest”); and aunt Cynthia Boyer.
This is why Rodney Hinton did what he did. These police officers abuse their power and never be held accountable. They always justify their use of force with the fears of being killed or the suspect didn't comply when words are escalated.
There is a viral video circulating on social media of a Black motorist being sucker punched by a Jacksonville-Duval County Sheriff's officer. The incident has gotten national attention.
Again, the U.S. has a controversial partnership with the Israel Occupation Forces.
The Israelis are training U.S. police agencies. They are showing law enforcement agencies how to use surveillance drones, Flock vehicle cameras, espionage and uses of restraint.
This partnership has led to police using their powers to punish civilians.
A damn traffic stop is dangerous for both the motorist and officers.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is launching an internal investigation after a video circulating on social media appeared to show a man forcibly removed from a vehicle and punched by police officers during a February traffic stop.
The video, posted on social media early Sunday, shows a traffic stop that police said occurred Feb. 19, 2025.
In the video, the driver claims a police officer pulled him over because his headlights were not on. The man notes that it was not raining and "multiple" other drivers didn't have their headlights on.
The video appears to have been taken when there was still light outside.
It appears the driver is talking to an officer by the passenger-side window, who cannot be seen in the video. That officer is heard saying, "It doesn't matter, you're still required to have headlights on."
The driver responds: "Can you pull that law up?" The officer then says, "Yeah, when you step out of the car, I will."
The driver is then heard saying, "Can you call your supervisor?" The officer says, "Huh," and the driver repeats, "Can you call your supervisor?"
The officer, who is out of frame, says, "Alright, go for it." Then, another officer standing outside the driver's window punches the driver's side window until it shatters. That officer then yells, "Exit the vehicle now," and repeats the phrase, and punches the driver in the head. The officer then asks the driver to "Show me your hands."
The driver, still seated, replies, "Here," with his hands raised. The driver then asks, "What is your reason, sir?" An officer then pulls the driver from his seat and out of the vehicle. An officer is heard saying, "Step out."
This is America.
At least five officers are seen in the video at this point, gathering around the driver. An officer grabs the driver while saying, "Get on the ground" and "Stop fighting." One officer is seen grabbing the driver's head and then punching him in the chin before the driver is forced to the ground.
This portion of the incident, when the man is on the ground, was not captured in the video. However, the driver and the officers can be heard arguing.
One officer can be heard saying, "Stop fighting," "Hands behind your back," "Stop resisting," and "What's wrong with you?"
The driver is heard saying, "What do you mean, I was putting my hands behind my back," before asking, "What's going on, man?" An officer replies, "You're under arrest, that's what's going on."
As the driver is being placed in handcuffs, an officer can be heard saying the driver had marijuana in his right pocket.
An officer is then seen ending the video moments later.
Hours after the video was posted on social media, it received thousands of views and comments.
Sunday afternoon, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters released the following statement:
A JSO spokesperson told First Coast News the agency is unaware of any filed complaint matching the video description.
Additionally, State Rep. Angie Nixon posted on social media about the video Sunday, saying she reached out to the sheriff's office to meet about the incident.
First Coast News has reached out to the user who posted the video, and we are still waiting to hear back. First Coast News is also working to identify the driver in the video.
The 45th/47th President of the United States decided to carry on this vendetta against his predecessor. His predecessor has left office in 2017, almost ten years ago.
President Donald J. Trump once again distracts his gullible base with notions of arresting former 46th president Joe Biden, former 44th president Barack Obama, former 49th vice president Kamala Harris, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, former CIA director John Brennan, former FBI director James Comey, Rosie O'Donnell and former special prosecutors Robert Mueller and Jack Smith.
Trump posted on Truth Social an AI video of Obama being arrested while the song YMCA is being played by the Village People. He deleted it but some of the MAGA bot farm posted it on X.
According to Trump and his moronic base, Obama tried to overturn an election.
The investigation into the Trump campaign in 2016 using Russian assistance has forever marred his chaotic legacy. Trump used information from Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn and Natalia Veselnitskaya to get access to Democratic National Committee emails. Russia hacked into the DNC, former Hillary Clinton campaign director John Podesta and Clinton's personal emails to give the public the notion that Clinton stole the win from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the 2016 Democratic primaries.

In order to take the heat off the allegations the president is in the Jeffrey Epstein files, Trump order his incompetent Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to release a series of allegations against Obama and his national security team.
It's not like Obama claimed that the 2020 U.S. election was "stolen."
It's not like Obama to call the Georgia state governor and secretary of the state to demand they find over 11,000 votes to void the certification of electoral votes.
It's not like Obama convincing his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol to harm members and his vice president to prevent the certification of the electoral college.
Trump's relentless grudges shows how America is losing democracy.
It's not like Obama telling Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to look into Burisma and its ties to then candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
It's not like Obama to openly call for a foreign government to interfere in a presidential election. I never heard Obama call for Russia, Israel, China and North Korea to meddle in the 2016, 2020 and 2024 elections.
It's not like Obama to ignore the World Health Organization's warnings of a spread of a strain of a coronavirus that originated from China.
It's not like Obama to deliberately ignore the National Archives demands to return classified information to the federal government.
It's not like Obama to use campaign coffers to pay an adult film star and a tabloid to bury an embarrassing story about an affair.
It's not like Obama to rile up conspiracy theorists about his birthplace, his religion and his education.
Yet, all of this happened under Trump. And he has not been held accountable for these actions. He was found liable for defamation and sexual abuse against E Jean Carroll which he is trying to overturn in federal court.
He is cognitively declining as we speak. Whomever running his X, Instagram, Facebook, Truth Social and TikTok accounts is pretty much trolling.
When his base and most of the public are calling for Trump to present accountability and results, all he does is distract, deflect, exaggerate and name calling critics.
His job approval is currently at 38%.
Vice President JD Vance's job approval is 42%.
Congress job approval is 23%.
Democrats have a 1.3 point advantage in the 2026 elections.
Trump's current job approval matches Biden's job approval in April 2024.
One more thing, Obama was not friends with a billionaire who was a sexual offender.
Trump is surrounding himself with incompetants. These Zionists, Charlie Kirk, Laura Loomer, Benny Johnson, Mark Levin and Sean "Softball" Hannity are making the decisions for a senile cognitively declining Trump.
They of course are pushing these allegations against Obama.
Trump rehashes his calls to boycott the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians. He wants them to change their names back to the Redskins and Indians.
To distract from the fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein files, President Donald J. Trump has cheered the cancellation of The Late Show. Trump had Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard release a series of pictographs depicting former president Barack Obama as the mastermind of the Trump-Russia collusion.
Trump called for Rosie O'Donnell to lose her American citizenship. O'Donnell left the United States to take residency in the Republic of Ireland.
Trump had demanded the Canadians to push for more detainment of immigrants.
Trump's Department of Homeland Security has slow walked FEMA responses to the massive floods in the United States.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio failed to warn residents in Springfield of a tornado touchdown.
Trump also sued News Corp after the Wall Street Journal released a bombshell story of the president drawing an image of a naked woman for Epstein's 50th birthday.
Trump also is denying he is having serious health concerns after he was spotted at the FIFA World Cup with swollen ankles. There was makeup covering a nasty bruise that was detected on the president's right hand.
The Trump administration has been reeling for the past two weeks after the DOJ concluded that deceased child sex trafficker Epstein did not have a client list and did not blackmail powerful people who may have engaged in criminal activity. Those findings were a far cry from Attorney General Pam Bondi’s claim back in February about Epstein’s client list “sitting on my desk.” Her department also declined to release files in the case, which she and FBI Director Kash Patel had claimed contained explosive and damaging information about notable figures.
President Donald J. Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson at the Army-Navy College Football Game.
Now the latest distraction is his demands to block potential funding to the city of Washington, DC for the building of a new football stadium in the Hill East neighborhood on the site of the old Robert F. Kennedy, Sr. Stadium. He demands the Washington Commanders change their team back to the Redskins.
He also called for Ohio Republicans to block any funding to build a new stadium for the Cleveland Guardians.
Trump said Sunday on his Truth Social site that “The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
Josh Harris, whose group bought the Commanders from former owner Dan Snyder in 2023, said earlier this year the name was here to stay. Not long after taking over, Harris quieted speculation about going back to Redskins, saying that would not happen.
Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti indicated before Sunday’s game against the Athletics that there weren’t any plans to revisit the name change.
“We understand there are different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago, but obviously it’s a decision we made. We’ve got the opportunity to build a brand as the Guardians over the last four years and are excited about the future that’s in front of us,” he said.
Trump hates woke and DEI.
Both teams have had their current names since the 2022 seasons. Washington dropped Redskins after the 2019 season and was known as the Washington Football Team for two years before moving to Commanders.
Cleveland announced in December 2020 it would drop Indians. It announced the switch to Guardians in July 2021. In 2018, the team phased out “Chief Wahoo” as its primary logo.
The name changes had their share of supporters and critics as part of national discussions about institutions and teams to drop logos and names considered racist.
The Guardians are the fifth name for Cleveland’s baseball franchise. It joined the American League in 1901 as one of the eight charter franchises as the Blues. It switched to the Bronchos a year later and used the Naps from 1903 through 1914 before moving to the Indians in 1915.
Washington started in Boston as the Redskins in 1933 before moving to the nation’s capital four years later.
Washington and Cleveland share another thing in common. David Blitzer is a member of Harris’ ownership group with the Commanders and holds a minority stake in the Guardians.
Rodney Hinton, Jr. killed a Hamilton County, Ohio sheriff's deputy after the Cincinnati Police killed his son Ryan in a police shooting.
Hinton was triggered by police officers using the "fear for their lives" excuses.
Police officers have used physical or deadly force whenever they are encountering suspects. Or in this case, peaceful protesters.
A handful of protesters stage a protest at the Roebling Bridge protesting ICE detaining a chaplin who was arrested after leaving a Homeland Security office in Blue Ash, Ohio.
The chaplin, Ayman Soliman who worked at Cincinnati Children's is currently at the Richard K. Jones Detention Center in Butler County.
Thr protests started from Freedom Plaza in downtown Cincinnati and made to the Roebling Bridge. As soon as they crossed the Ohio River, the Covington, Kentucky police met with violence.
A Covington police officer was placed on administrative duty after a clash with protesters on the Roebling Bridge Thursday night.
Protesters with Ignite Peace Cincy started to gather Thursday night at the Sing the Queen City sign in Cincinnati to call for his release.
The protest started as a peaceful gathering, but took a turn when protesters crossed the bridge, with some of them in the road.
Fifteen people are facing charges in the incident, ranging from unlawful assembly, failure to disperse, obstructing a highway and criminal mischief. Two journalists were among the people arrested and charged.
At one point during the protest, video appears to show a black SUV drive onto the Roebling Bridge, with people in yellow safety vests and face masks grabbing on to the car to get the driver to stop.
Covington police said officers spoke with the driver of the SUV, saying he did not have an obligation to stop.

Initially, protesters were seen walking in the middle of the bridge, but some people said they stuck to the sidewalks and were approached by officers.
During the tense confrontation, attempts to detain protesters ended with physical confrontations. One video shows a woman being pulled to the ground by officers.
Covington police said Friday that one officer who was seen punching a protester was placed on administrative duty as the department investigates the response.
"We have opened an investigation into that," Covington police chief Brian Valenti said. "I don't want to speculate as to how that's going to turn out."
The Covington officer will continue to be paid while the investigation plays out and will perform administrative tasks within the department.
And you wonder why Rodney Hinton did what he did?
Body camera video from the incident shows officers walking up to protesters on bicycles who were in the middle of the road. Police are heard telling them to move or they would be arrested.
"While the department supports the public's right to peaceful assembly and expression, threatening officers and blocking critical infrastructure, such as a major bridge, presents a danger to all involved," Covington police said in a statement.
Valenti said the last Covington police officer who died while on the force fell from the Roebling Bridge while trying to arrest someone in 1998, so the department makes officers aware of the dangers of that bridge.
You heard the statement from the Covington Police. It is a damn cop out. If the protesters were on the Interstate 75 freeway blocking traffic, then yeah, they can hit them up with the impeding critical infrastructure.
Yeah, screaming at police is protected speech. Police officers should not be triggered by words. If the suspect doesn't commit an act of violence towards the police, they should remain professional.
It is best to film police. President Donald J. Trump stated in his 2019 speech about roughing up people. Trump gave America the greenlight to commit violence.
Since his return, the decline of the United States has excelled.
Vehicle attacks are on the rise. More individuals are crashing into pedestrians.
Some could be medical emergencies. Others are intentional acts where a suspect decides to cause havoc upon those who are perceived as an enemy.

Days after a training accident killing three Los Angeles County Sheriffs Office Deputies.
President Donald J. Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA), Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Mayor Karen Bass and the U.S. House members of California were notified.
The incident, which was believed to be an accident, was reported around 7:30 a.m. at the Biscailuz Training Facility in the 1000 block of North Eastern Avenue, LASD said. The compound houses the sheriff's department's special enforcement units and bomb squad.
Multiple law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told ABC News that it appears the explosive the depurites were handling had been brought back to the facility from a seemingly routine bomb squad callout and was believed to have been inert when it exploded.
ABC News also reports the victims were identified as Deputy Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Deputy Victor Lemus, and Deputy William Osborn, who were all assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau's Arson Explosives Detail.
According to a social media post from LASD, Detective Kelley-Eklund joined the department in March 2006. He was known as an outstanding field training officer who was professional and articulate. He became an Arson and Explosive Investigator with the Special Enforcement Bureau and received his bomb tech certifications as well as other training accolades in 2022. He's survived by his loving wife, Jessica Eklund, and their 7 children.
Detective Victor Lemus joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 2003. He transferred to the Special Enforcement Bureau in 2017, where he was assigned as a K-9 Handler prior to becoming an Arson and Explosive Investigator last year, according to LASD. He received commendations for his ability to mentor and train fellow deputies as well as notable arrests involving career criminals. He's survived by his wife, Sheriff's Department Detective Nancy Lemus, and three daughters. He has three sisters who are also on the Department, Sergeant Belen Lemus at Special Victims Bureau, Deputy Perla Lemus at Century Sheriff Station, and Custody Assistant Wendy Lemus of Population and Management Bureau. He is also survived by his brothers Alfredo, Pedro, Juan, and Efren and brother-in-law Sergeant Robert Catalan who is assigned to Carson Station.
Detective William Osborn graduated from the deputy sheriff Academy Class 278 in February 1992. He joined Special Enforcement Bureau as an Arson and Explosive Investigator in 2019. As an Arson investigator, he handled cases involving high-dollar loss fires in residential properties, as well as fires involving the loss of life, LASD said. He was a peer leader and took on the role of mentoring newly assigned investigators. He was described as "one of tenured bomb technicians regularly relied upon when faced with a new challenge. He has broad range of experience and could be relied upon to provide relevant insight on broad range of subjects."
L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna says the specialized explosives unit responds to about 1,100 calls a year, but it's unclear what went wrong on Friday morning.
"There are no words to express the pain and sorrow we feel," Luna said. "These heroes represented the best of our Department, exemplifying courage, integrity, and selfless service. This is not only a heartbreaking loss for their families, but for all of us."
One of the deputies improperly detonated an explosive.
Between the three of them, the deceased employees had served in the department for 74 years, according to Luna.
Luna said the catastrophe marked LASD's worst loss of life in a single incident since 1857.
The deputies who were killed Friday also worked at the Board of Supervisors. No one else was injured in the explosion.
"I have met with two of the three families thus far, and as you can imagine, those were extremely challenging conversations," Luna said earlier Friday, choking back tears.
Embattled U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI director Kash Patel confirm they will investigate the incident.
Explosives found at Santa Monica apartment building Thursday may be tied to deadly blast
Several law enforcement agencies spent hours on Friday carefully searching a Santa Monica apartment building in the 800 block of Bay Street, where the device that exploded on Friday may have originally come from.
Investigators say the three deputies killed helped Santa Monica police with a bomb squad call on Thursday.
The FBI, ATF, LAPD bomb technicians, and sheriff's detectives were working to determine if devices found in the building are tied to the tragic explosion.
"The bomb squad went into the parking garage and recovered several grenades, and we didn't have to evacuate," resident Michael Kellman told Eyewitness News. "And then today, around 2 o'clock, a lot of officers showed up again."
This time, investigators ordered residents to evacuate as they searched a storage locker and at least one apartment unit.
"The only thing I remember from yesterday was getting this weird email from our HOA president saying that inert grenades had been found in the garage," resident Ivan Perkins said.
The HOA president told a resident that a former tenant who had been in the military may have left the explosive devices behind, and a current resident discovered them in her storage locker on Thursday.
"The woman who has lived there for years now had never seen them before, and that they kind of fell as she went in to look for something," Kellman said.
Numerous law enforcement officers were seen going in and out of the garage for hours.
End of watch.
Residents were allowed to return home later Friday evening.
The department did not immediately say the Santa Monica search is necessarily tied to the deadly explosion, but it is part of the investigation. Officials said it is not yet determined if the devices found at the Santa Monica apartment complex have any correlation to the explosion.
The sheriff's department issued the following statement:
"On Thursday our Arson Explosives Detail personnel who were involved in today's fatal incident responded to the 800 block of Bay Street in Santa Monica for a call for service to assist Santa Monica PD. Homicide Detectives are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the location and out of the abundance of caution the LAPD Bomb Squad, ATF and FBI will search the location for any potential explosive materials. At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation to today's critical incident.
Santa Monica PD is assisting the Sheriff's Department in this incident and have evacuated the residents in the complex. They are in the process of locating a shelter for displaced residents."
At least 30 people were injured after a car plowed through a crowd in East Hollywood, when a driver apparently lost consciousness, authorities said.
The crash occurred shortly before 2 a.m. near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Avenue. At least seven people were in critical condition, six were in serious condition and more than a dozen were treated on site, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Twenty-three patients were transported.
Among the injured was a male with a gunshot wound, the LAFD said. Authorities said 124 fire personnel responded at the scene.
Witnesses said bystanders also took the driver of the vehicle out of his car and attacked him following the car ramming. The driver was shot during the melee, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The shooter remained at large.
The car slammed into a crowd standing outside of music venue The Vermont. The crowd included clubgoers, valet attendants and food vendors from a nearby taco stand, according to the fire department.
LAFD Capt. Adam Van Gerpen said that a line of people - the majority female - were waiting to enter the nightclub when they were struck by a Nissan Versa that also hit the taco truck and valet stand.
People inside the club came out to help in the minutes before emergency crews arrived, he said, to help the victims.
"They were all standing in line going into a nightclub. There was a taco cart out there, so they were ... getting some food, waiting to go in. And there's also a valet line there," Van Gerpen said. "The valet podium was taken out, the taco truck was taken out, and then a large number of people were impacted by the vehicle."
The club was hosting a reggae/hip hop event from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., according to its online calendar.

WHITE PRIVILEGE IS REAL! IT'S "SUIT AND TIE" WHITE SUPREMACY ON TELEVISION, RADIO, THE INTERNET AND AMERICAN POLICY!
FOR EVERY BAD COP, THERE WILL BE A DEAD COP!
IF THE UNITED STATES CONTINUES TO AID ISRAEL, THE WORLD WILL BOYCOTT THE U.S. AND ABANDON THE DOLLAR!
I DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET OR THE COP'S VERSION.
THERE IS NO GOD!
GOD IS NOT FIXING THIS!
FUCK YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!
Trump gave us open season.
These murderers don't have mental illness. They are calculated and prepared. It happened to be a moment where they have the opportunity to take out lives.
There's no sickness in the head. Most mass shooters legally obtain their assault rifles without little background checks. They have likely no criminal history and they are willing to use the assault weapon in the only thing it's good for: Killing numerous lives.
I dismiss this ridiculous notion that criminals are the problem, not the guns.
Firearms are often obtained through legal purchases.
Again, having more security, teachers being armed and offering safe rooms are not solving the problem. The problem is lawmakers not willing to stop gun violence.
According to the far right: White shooters are mentally ill. Black shooters are unrepentant thugs and criminals. Gay shooters are active groomers. Muslim shooters are terrorists. Hispanic and Asian shooters are illegal immigrants. According to the far right, almost all white [or non-white] mass shooters are registered Democrats [or some progressive activist] because they have liked or done one thing common to the left. Of course, they often share or post disinformation by using the "Sam Hyde" meme or make bogus social media platforms with the shooter's image as a way to denounce most mass shooters being white or associated with conservative causes. The far right says a white person should "protect" themselves from thugs, terrorists or protesters. They believe the use of firearms are "justified" if they are protesting or even instigating a conflict. The far right believes if a shooter is a police officer, an active military member, a veteran or a citizen who supports conservative causes, they are considered a "heroes" and use of firearms are justified. If the shooters are teens in urban communities, the far right automatically assumes the gunmen are Black.
The Republicans usually amplify white victims. Anytime a person of color kills a white victim, it is often wall-to-wall coverage on Fox, Twitter and they force it into national news. They make the case to blame Black Lives Matter, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, Democrats, Rev. Al Sharpton and rap music for Black on whatever violence. Republican legislators who do not live in urban neighborhoods often troll social media to talk about gun violence or crime in Chicago, Baltimore, Milwaukee and New York City while not doing a damn thing to stop it. If a white person shoots a Black person, the shooter is given the benefit of doubt. White shooters are given glowing profiles about their perfect lives and how friends noticed something but refused to do something. When it comes to Black shooters, automatic vilification. They don't see mental illness. They see it as gang violence, allegedly fatherless homes, Democratic policies or the need for more firearms.
Expect more.
Holding these lawmakers accountable is not just a pledge, but a promise. You need to learn who represents your community. Your local community member, your school board member, your mayor, your state representative, your state senator, your governor, your U.S. Representative, your U.S. Senator and the president need to be held accountable for their actions.
We need to put pressure on Republicans and Democrats to do something to improve everyone's lives. Keep pressure on them with Israel.
Israel must be held accountable for war crimes and the U.S. must end its aid.
Our taxpayer money should not help Israel any further.
Republicans have extremely unpopular ideas. They will find out the risk of supporters being turned off by their policies.
Biden, Harris and the Democratic Party failed at understanding what is more important to the country. Trump, Vance and the Republican Party have already failed at understanding.
Both parties support of Israel had made some Arab Americans, Muslim and young voters vote against them. They have cost Biden a second term and Harris a historical victory.

The call center to the White House and Congress should still be the same.
The call number to the White House and U.S. Capitol is now going to be used. This is the official White House numbers 202-456-1111 and 202-456-1414. This is the Congress official phone number, 202-224-3121. Please be respectful to operators, staff members and elected leaders. Your calls are monitored by the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Capitol Police.
Let them know that "thoughts and prayers," "hearts going to" and "good guys with guns" are no longer acceptable and you want legislation to curb gun violence. Let them know that we need to protect pedestrians from vehicle attacks. Let them know that we are tired of police officers using immunity when committing death of suspects in custody. Let them know that deporting law abiding immigrants seeking refuge is inhumane. Let them know that cutting federal government services will have a major impact on our economy and the stability of our nation.
You want our American military out of the Middle East and every fucking international conflict in the world. You want legislation to focus on ending gun violence, lowering the cost of rent, lowering the cost of food, lowering the cost of hospital visits, improving healthcare and building relationships with other nations. You want road duets to curb dangerous accidents with vehicles.
Let them know that pulling out of the UN Human Rights Organization, World Health Organization and Paris Climate Accords will put the U.S. in danger when catastrophic event happen. Let them know that you are tired of private equity firms getting away with destroying small businesses and long established companies. Let them know that you are tired of your taxpayer money going to foreign nations like Israel and Ukraine. You are tired of hearing about "Israel having a right to..." and the bogus claims of being anti-semitic or in support of terrorism.
We have bigger issues at home and our tax dollars should solve the housing crisis, lowering food prices, fixing roads, bridges, helping reinvest in struggling urban and rural communities. We have hospitals closing, big box retailers leaving communities and television programs dying. There are bigger issues in the country than Israel. You want an immediate ceasefire and accountability for war crimes done by Israel. You want no more foreign influence in American elections. You also want to make sure future presidents and lawmakers avoid influence from lobbyists.
Pedophiles in courage. Donald J. Trump sues Rupert Murdoch. Both are sexual predators.
President Donald J. Trump gleefully mocks the CBS cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The decision was controversial.
On Thursday, Variety reported that CBS announced that The Late Show will end after the 2025-26 season. Colbert was bot happy about this decision.
Sheri Redstone, a Zionist who is the heir of Paramount has tried to sell it to Skydance. The FCC must approve the sale of the companies. Paramount paid out $16 million to Trump after he sued the producers of 60 Minutes for a segment featuring former vice president Kamala Harris. Colbert called a bribe and two days later the announcement of The Late Show being cancelled. They claim it was a "financial decision."
Trump had sued ABC News last year and they settled as well. It involved an interview with South Carolina Republican, the insufferable Nancy Mace. George Stephanopoulos had said that Trump was found liable for rape and it led to Mace (an alleged sexual abuse survivor) declaring she will no longer appear on ABC News. Trump decided to sue because he was a rapist, just an ajudicated sexual abuser. Stephanopoulos and David Muir were not happy about ABC News settling with Trump. Bob Iger and Almin Karamehmedovic paid out Trump $20 million.
Now another shake down.
Trump once again turns on Rupert Murdoch.
Trump has made good on his pledge to sue over The Wall Street Journal's Thursday report that Trump wrote a "bawdy" letter to Jeffrey Epstein on his 50th birthday.
Trump on Friday filed suit against Rupert Murdoch, Dow Jones, the CEO of News Corp, Robert Thomson, and Khadeeja Safdar and Joseph Palazzolo, both reporters for the Wall Street Journal, accusing the group of committing defamation by publishing the article. The suit seeks at least $10 billion in damages.
"Despite the glaring failures in journalistic ethics and standards of accurate reporting, Defendants Dow Jones and News Corp. — at the direction of Defendants Murdoch and Thomson — published to the world the false, defamatory, and malignant statements authored by Defendants Safdar and Palazzolo," the filing reads.
It continues: "Hundreds of millions of people have already viewed the false and defamatory statements published by Defendants. And given the timing of the Defendants' article, which shows their malicious intent behind it, the overwhelming financial and reputational harms suffered by President Trump will continue to multiply."
The president's claims against the media outlet stem from a report published on Thursday. The Journal's reporting detailed a suggestive letter, bearing Trump's name, that was presented to Epstein as part of a book of letters gifted to him on his 50th birthday, in 2003.
Trump baited MAGA with this. Now he is stuck with it.
"Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret," the letter, which featured a drawing of a nude woman and Trump's signature, said, according to the Journal.
In a statement on Truth Social made after the suit was filed, Trump wrote that the complaint was "a POWERHOUSE Lawsuit against everyone involved in publishing the false, malicious, defamatory, FAKE NEWS 'article' in the useless 'rag' that is, The Wall Street Journal."
Trump has denied writing the letter or drawing the picture, calling it "a fake thing" in a comment to The Journal. Following the report, the president pledged to sue the media outlet for publishing the story in a series of posts on Truth Social.
"I look forward to getting Rupert Murdoch to testify in my lawsuit against him and his 'pile of garbage' newspaper, the WSJ. That will be an interesting experience!!!" Trump wrote in a Friday morning post.
In a statement provided to Business Insider, a Dow Jones spokesperson said, "We have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit."
The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Florida and reviewed by Business Insider, is on a different court docket with a different docket number than one that led to a spate of headlines from other news publications.
That other court docket does not feature a lawsuit and includes odd details, including an indication that Trump had no lawyer.
Business Insider previously reported that the initial docket featured unusual details, including listing Trump as a "pro se" plaintiff — meaning someone who is not being represented by a lawyer — despite the president having a large roster of personal lawyers and a history of filing suits against various media organizations in the same district.
A person close to Trump's legal team said the initial reporting about the lawsuit wasn't legitimate and that the official complaint was in process but had not yet been submitted to the court. The source told BI that the lawsuit could come as soon as later Friday.
The origin of the first reported lawsuit remains unclear.
The complaint against Murdoch and The Journal reporters comes as Trump continues to grapple with his ties to the now-dead financier and convicted sex offender.
As part of his reelection campaign, Trump promised he would make public all the available files related to the government's investigation into Epstein's crimes. After taking office, he has changed his tune — and the Department of Justice says it won't be releasing any more "Epstein Files."
Though publicly available documents related to Epstein's sex trafficking trial have not accused Trump of any wrongdoing, Trump's name and those of some of his family members were listed in one of Epstein's contact books, and Trump is mentioned as a passenger in flight logs for Epstein's private jets.
