The U.S. Senate is now taking up voting rights. The House passed the John Lewis For The People Voter Rights Act and the Senate will quickly take up the measure and are considering scrapping the filibuster.
The bill is hopefully going to eliminate issues involving voting. I hope they're considering giving the U.S. territories an opportunity to vote in 2024 presidential election. The U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands cannot vote in presidential elections.
Hopefully the Congress changes that.
The bill is hoping to reduce money in politics, limit partisan gerrymandering, create new ethic rules for federal ethic officeholders as well as restoring voting rights to felons.
The would require states to offer same-day voting registration for federal elections and to permit voters to make changes to their registration at polls. It would require states to hold early voting for at least 15 days and would establish automatic voter registration. It would also make Election Day a federal holiday.
It would give 16- and 17-year olds to pre-registered to vote in advance of them becoming 18 years old.
It would also prohibit the practice of voter caging and restrict the practice of voter-roll purging by limiting states' ability to remove registered voters from the rolls.
It would also make the President of the United States, Vice President of the United States and presidential and vice presidential candidates publicly disclose their 10 years income tax returns.
It would also create an independent commission to draw congressional district lines, except in several states where one congressional district exist. It would establish an equal commission of five Democrats, five Republicans and five independents to determine whether the district is fair and competitive.
So the Utah senator is deciding that making elections are fair and equal is "the devil's work."
White nationalist, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) went to Fox News to complain about it.
On Wednesday, Lee, during an appearance on "Fox & Friends," said the legislation was "rotten to the core" and takes the constitutional rights to regulate voting away from states and put those decisions in the hands of Congress.
Lee said elections in the United States have always been conducted at the local and state level and that by passing the bill, Democrats are ensuring they will remain in power for decades.
"I think I disagree with every single word in HR1, including the words ‘but,’ ‘and,’ and ‘the.’ Everything about this bill is rotten to the core. This is a bill as if written in hell by the devil himself. This takes all sorts of decisions that the federal government really has no business making. It takes them away from the states, makes them right here in Washington D.C. by Congress.
Apparently in an effort to ensure an institutionally, revolutionary-democratic party of sorts. One that can remain in power for many decades to come. It does this by taking away these decisions. Elections in America have always been conducted at the state and local levels..."
Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at Lee over the comment during his monologue Wednesday night.
“This is a bill that would expand voting rights and reform redistricting laws. Republicans in the Senate don’t like that because it limits their ability to prevent poor people from voting, and no one is more upset about than Utah Sen. Mike Lee,” Kimmel said before showing a clip of Lee.
Kimmel then chuckles and says, “The devil is not in hell writing bills. The devil is in Mar-a-Lago eating fried chicken.”
