I've passed through that area often and never knew that was a part of history. However, history will be demolished soon. The city of Dayton approved for the demolishing of the old Wright Brothers Bicycle factory on Third Street on the grounds of the Wright-Dunbar Historical National Park.
The 129-year old structure is considered too dangerous and not structurally capable.
So the city zoning board approved for the building to be destroyed. It can not be maintained or redeveloped.
While agreeing that most of the building should be demolished, the Dayton Landmarks Commission rejected the demolition request in September. The panel instead recommended that the city re-advertise the property and encourage its preservation the historic facade.
The board voted 5 to 1 this week to reverse the commission's decision and gave the city permission to rae the property.
The shop was first built in 1892 to serve as the Orville and Wilbur Wright's first bike shop. Soon after, the Gem City Ice Cream Co. bought the property and housed it until 1975 until it was sold to another company. Since I've been alive, that building remained an abandoned structure for graffiti and vagrants.
There are buildings in the city that literally collapsed. I've seen it on my drives. It's not worth saving if the risk of collapse is possible.
I get that Dayton was the hometown of the Wright brothers. They built their Wright Flyer I and tested the model in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. They built and modeled the Wright Flyer II and flew it as well numerous experiments at Huffman Prairie.
The Wright brothers are American heroes and pioneers of flight.
Dayton should have kept the building in good condition since the 1980s. It's been over 40 years and nothing was done to keep it in tact. So it's time to move forward. We can only hope we can Build Back Better by reinvesting in West Dayton.
The city of Dayton is part of the Rust Belt. It is one of the many cities that struggled with population growth and is still suffering from losses of manufacturing.
The community also is dealing with a pandemic in which one out of 30 people are dying from the coronavirus.
