The founding member of Kool & The Gang has passed away.

The father of the late actress Michelle Thomas, Dennis "Dee Tee Thomas" passed away in his sleep while at home in Montclair, New Jersey. 

The band announced the passing of Thomas on their social media.

"An original member of Kool & The Gang, Dennis was known as the quintessential cool cat in the group, love for his hip clothes and hats, and his laid-back demeanor," the group said in a statement. "A huge personality while also an extremely private person, Dennis was the alto saxophone player, flutist, percussionist as well as master of ceremonies at the band's shows. Dennis' prologue featured on the groups 1971 hit, 'Who's Gonna Take the Weight' is legendary and an example of his showmanship."

"Dee Tee was the group's wardrobe stylist who made sure they always looked fresh. In the band's early days, Dennis also served as the 'budget hawk,' carrying the group's earnings in a paper bag in the bell of his horn," the statement said.

He was born in 1951 in Orlando, Thomas was known for his prologue on the band's 1971 hit, "Who's Gonna Take the Weight." He was known to carry their earnings in a paper bag stuff into the bell of his horn.

The group was founded in 1964. It was created on the sounds of jazz, soul and funk. They called themselves the Jazziacs before they would settle on calling themselves Kool & The Gang. 

The group's other founders are Ronald and Robert Bell, Spike Mickens, Ricky Westfield, George Brown and Charles Smith,

Dee Tee was survived by his wife Phynjuar Saunders Thomas, Tuesday Rankin, David Thomas, Devin Thomas and the late Michelle Thomas.

Dee Tee's daughter was Michelle Thomas, a very popular actress of the late 1990s.

Michelle Thomas was best known for her role on Family Matters as Myra Monkhouse, the on-and-off love interest of Steve Urkel, played by Jaleel White. Thomas passed away in 1998 from  a rare cancer, an intra-abdominal desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor (DSRCT).

Michelle never smoked or drank alcohol, and was a vegetarian. Her mother added that "they'd give her a sedation that was supposed to put her out for 20 minutes and she'd be asleep for four days. Her body couldn't take it."[18] Thomas underwent surgery to remove a lemon-sized tumor shortly before landing her The Young and the Restless role in the spring of 1998. She underwent surgery again in October 1998 after a second cancerous growth ruptured. After being released from the hospital, Thomas flew home to New Jersey to spend Thanksgiving with her family in Weehawken, New Jersey.

On December 23, at age 30, Thomas died surrounded by her family and friends in New York City at Manhattan's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Thomas' longtime friend and former boyfriend, was among those at her bedside. On December 26, 1998, a Muslim funeral service was held, per her request. She was buried in New Jersey.
