| Walk a mile in her shoes. |
Off to a great start.
Rep-elect Lakesha Womack (D-NC) is under investigation for a petty issue. It is a felony.
But to the defeated lawmaker, Rep. Tim Moore (R-RC) and Republicans, it should be a disqualification. Well that is an issue that a court will decide and given this is just an issue that many others faced, it is not really that serious in my opinion.
I rented a vehicle from Hertz. I went through Priceline to rent a vehicle so I could take a vacation to Nashville. I hadn't had a vacation since 2016. To this day, no vacation.
Well I went paid $500 for a four day affair. I left the airport and headed to my parent's home. We inspected the vehicle and made sure there was no hidden issues like stains, broken equipment or issues that could affect my leasing of the vehicle.
Everything checked out okay.
So I went home and got sleep. I was expected to leave for Tennessee around 9am.
I had gotten my luggage prepared and had all my packed food and supplies ready.
As I left my home I go to the parking lot and saw it was missing. I was shocked. I was holding the keys and thinking the vehicle was stolen. I called the rental company and went to my apartment landlord with anger. One of the grounds workers said that a towing company that wasn't affiliated with them towed the vehicle at 8am.
So I spent two hours calling the towing companies in the area. I called the towing company that had my rental. The company is aligned to MAGA. In the earlier call, I was trying to be pleasant about the ordeal and ask for the vehicle back stating I rightly rented it. The operator was a total asshole. Second time, I directly told them that if they bring this vehicle back to me by the end the day, I would report it the police.
I called the rental company demanding why they towed the vehicle. They told me that the previous renter failed to return the vehicle and they had placed a tracking device on it and the towing company got a ping and retrieved the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to the airport and I went back to the facility. I ended up getting my money back and not a sympathetic apology.
My vacation was ruined. I spent the whole week just trying to make the best of week by staying home.
I am lucky they towed the car instead of calling the law and have police draw guns on me for something I never done.
Now a lot of people have voice frustrations with rental car companies. There are lawsuits and potential for federal regulations to rental car companies.
Womack is just like every other car renter. She was caught up in the same mess that hundreds of others dealt with. Maybe that's why she ran. She wants to change the fucking system.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday, Oct. 11, deputies served 49-year-old Womack with a felony warrant. The warrant was from 2020 charging her with failure to return hired motor vehicle with a value over $4,000.
Polk County is a Republican county. Interesting.
Womack allegedly rented a 2019 Toyota Corolla from Budget Car Rental in October 2019 and allegedly did not return it by the agreed upon date, according to an arrest warrant.
The value of the car was worth $20,000, according to the warrant.
The criminal summons was was originally issued in January 2020, but was not served until this year.
It was not immediately clear why the warrant was not served until now.
Womack is running for Congressional District 14 which includes Gastonia, Shelby, Morganton, and parts of far south Charlotte.
Womack previously acknowledged failing to return the rental car on time, saying she was experiencing homelessness at the time and was unaware that a criminal case had been filed against her.
"This historic victory is bigger than me. It is a testament to the power of ordinary people who believe that their voices matter and that leadership should be rooted in service, accountability, and opportunity for all," Womack told Fox News Digital in a statement on Friday. "As a Black woman, a single mother, an entrepreneur, and someone who has spent more than two decades helping communities grow, I understand both the challenges people face and the possibilities we can create together."
Under North Carolina law, the charge is a Class H felony that can carry a prison sentence exceeding two years, depending on the defendant's criminal history and other sentencing factors.
Under House rules, members formally charged with a felony punishable by two or more years in prison are expected to step aside from committee assignments and party leadership positions while the charges remain pending, a provision that could become relevant to Womack once she takes office in January.
The suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
It is basically a minor issue but for Republicans it is another culture war and presumption of guilt.
Womack had shared experiences of being homeless and poor. She had to make choices that some think are unsuitable for public service.
The most severe controversy surrounds Hertz and Budget falsely reporting rented vehicles as stolen, leading to the traumatic arrests, felony charges, and temporary jailings of hundreds of innocent customers.
As highlighted in recent high-profile cases, Budget heavily relies on local law enforcement to resolve late or disputed rentals. Instead of handling unreturned vehicles through civil collections, they frequently file Class H felony charges for failure to return a motor vehicle, which can result in active warrants or unexpected summonses years after the rental occurred.
