It appears that President-elect Joe Biden will select Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) as his pick for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. If confirmed, she will replace Dr. Benjamin Carson, a former neurologist who was picked by President Donald J. Trump to lead the department.
Carson is the most ineffective H.U.D. Secretary in the history of the organization. He failed in so many ways to help families struggling with this COVID-19 pandemic. He was even stupid enough to attend the Trump Campaign watch party at the White House without facial protection.
Carson and his wife, Candy both ended up getting the coronavirus. Carson failed to help families keep their homes. It’s a good thing he’s gone.
Two people familiar with the transition team have confirmed that Biden is picking the Ohio Congresswoman to head the department. She will be the first African American woman to hold this cabinet.
Fudge is also in consideration for agriculture secretary, but that likely is now off the table.
Biden is very cautious about taking members from the House and Senate. While leftists are demanding he picks Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to lead Cabinet positions, the progressives and rational Democrats are saying that Republican governors will pick their replacements and it will give the GOP a stronger Senate majority.
His pick of Fudge and Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA) won’t hurt the Democrats. The seat that Fudge represents is relatively safe for now. Her district is Cleveland and Akron, two strong Democratic-leaning cities. Richmond’s district which includes the city of New Orleans is safe for now.
“She’s ready to serve,” a source said to CNN. For the transition, Fudge was viewed as flexible, highly skilled utility player. After vetting, the question was “where to put her, what would be the best use of the skills.”
If Fudge was not picked, she would have been aggressively pushing for a new House Speaker.
Democrats believe that Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are toxic and if they continue to lead, the Democrats could lose the majority. The Republicans have vilified them and the Squad as ineffective lawmakers.
Fudge challenged Pelosi for the spot. But she withdrew her bid and threw her support for the California lawmaker.
Fudge was the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. She was then the mayor of Warrensville Heights. She served as the mayor from 2008 to 2008. She began her career in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
Under Ohio state law, when there is a vacancy for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, it is up to the governor to order a special election to fill the seat. There are no specific deadlines listed for when the special election must be held.
Fudge took on a Black Republican by the name of Laverne Gore. Fudge won her seat by 60 points.
Fudge has represented Ohio’s 11rh Congressional District since 2008. She replaced Stephanie Tubbs-Jones. Tubbs-Jones had passed away after suffering a brain aneurysm.
Biden’s Cabinet is pretty diverse. He has Linda Thomas-Greenfield, a Black woman who is appointed to be the United Nations Ambassador. He has Alejandro Mayorkas as the Homeland Security secretary, the first Latino and person of Cuban American heritage. He has Neera Tanden, as the Office of Management and Budget head, a woman of South Asian heritage. He has Cecilia Rouse, who will serve the Council of Economic Advisers, a Black woman. He has Xavier Becerra, who will be Mexican-American heritage to serve as Health and Human Services secretary. He will have Lloyd Austin as the Defense Secretary, an African American.
Let’s not forget Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. She is the first woman of color to be elected as the Vice President of the United States. She is the first Black woman and first woman of South Asian heritage to be vice president.
