DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF KING?: A REVIEW ESSAY, THE - page 3 Encounter: "Young argues, it had to do with a fear of sexuality:
Deeply buried but intense sexual fear of black males, illustrated by the sexual nature of attacks on black men by whites who seek to control or destroy black aggressiveness, has been a persistent pattern in the South since the advent of slavery. From the systematic destruction of the black family during slavery to contemporary barriers for black males attempting to protect and provide for their families via the imposition of strong societal and economic proscriptions, there is a recurrent theme: controlling black men. The theme was ever-present at lynchings of black men for allegations of rape or for flirtation with white women, and is always evident somewhere in the heavy punishment awaiting black men who assert or advocate the interests of their people. The FBI campaign was very much consistent with this neurotic white Southern racist tradition"

2011-03-08-brisenia.flores.jpegRaul A. Reyes: Brisenia Flores Was a Victim of Border Vigilantes and Media Indifference [huffpo.com] - Compare Brisenia's tragedy to that of another nine-year-old in
Arizona. When Christina Taylor Green was killed in the attack on
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her death led to national
soul-searching over the tenor of our political discourse. Christina was
eulogized in President Obama's 2011 State of the Union address as her family sat with the First Lady.

Or consider the murder of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz
last year. Krentz was shot by unknown assailants who were believed to
be undocumented immigrants. His death inspired an outcry over illegal
immigration. Politicians invoked his name at Department of Homeland
Security hearings and in the subsequent passing of SB 1070.

I don't mean to take away from the suffering of the Green and Krentz
families. However, Brisenia's death did not provoke anywhere near the
same amount of attention, let alone outrage by politicians and the news
media.

A commenter by the name of Chuck speculated that white men (as a group) may be innately less attracted to black women than they are other races of women, and visa versa. events in conjunction with the project including daily tours of the
installation, providing educational materials, supporting a movie
screening as well as a panel of speakers. This project is designed to

GOP-led House is moving to restrict funding of abortions

WASHINGTON — The battle over abortion takes center stage in Congress this week as two House subcommittees hold hearings on separate bills that would expand restrictions on federal funding of abortions.
The "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" would eliminate tax breaks for abortions. The "Protect Life Act" would restrict use of federal funds for abortions under the new health care law. While both may pass the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, their prospects of passing a Democratic-held Senate or escaping President Barack Obama's veto pen are slim to none.
"They can't expect this legislation to go beyond the House or Representatives," said Steve Smith, a political science professor at Washington University in St. Louis. "It allows the House Republicans to do something symbolically important for their coalition base."
Still, the bills have alarmed abortion-rights advocates, who say they are attempts to attack legalized abortion — federally funded or not — through the tax code and measures to deny women access to the procedure.
"These bills represent a new front in the abortion war," said Donna Crane, policy director for NARAL Pro-Choice America. "The idea...of using the tax code to impose political views, that's extremely alarming."
Opponents of legal abortion, emboldened by powerful support in a Republican-controlled House, say the bills are just the beginning.
"The Republicans in the House are definitely following the promise they made to undo the damage that's been done," said Kerry Brown, a spokeswoman for Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion group.
The "No Taxpayer for Abortion Act," designated H.R. 3 and sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), seeks to codify provisions of the so-called Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funding for abortion but must be renewed by Congress annually.
In addition, Smith said his bill would "permanently end any U.S. government financial support for abortion whether it be direct funding or by tax credits or any other subsidy." A House Judiciary subcommittee will hold a hearing on it Tuesday.
Smith's bill stirred a huge uproar among abortion-rights advocates by listing victims of "forcible rape" among those who would be exempted from the bill.
"Forcible rape" wasn't fully defined in the bill, but abortion-rights supporters warned that the term could be used to block access to abortion for rape victims who were drugged, unconscious or mentally ill.
A spokesman for Smith said the term was dropped from the bill Thursday after Smith concluded that the term was being "misconstrued." That wasn't enough to satisfy abortion supporters.
"The fact that it took weeks of public outrage before the new House leadership was shamed into giving up one if its efforts to redefine rape to deny women access to abortion shows how out of touch they are with the values of the American people," said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "Simply put, the now discarded 'forcible rape' provision is just the beginning of what's wrong with Rep. Smith's bill."
Like Smith's bill, the Protect Life Act, or H.R. 358, sponsored by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), seeks to restrict the use of federal funds under the new health care law, but isn't as aggressive in terms of using the tax code. The House Energy and Commerce health subcommittee, which Pitts chairs, will hold a hearing on it Wednesday.
Late last week, abortion-rights supporters turned their attention to Pitts' bill, saying it contains language that would allow hospitals to deny a woman an abortion, even if her life were in jeopardy.
Andrew Wimer, a Pitts spokesman, calls the accusation false. He said the language is an attempt to include in the health care law a "conscience clause" for doctors and hospitals that object to performing abortions.
"These are typical attacks that come up," Wimer said.
Abortion foes both in and out of Congress say they're undeterred by criticism. Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said that taking on abortion would be a House priority under his leadership.
"A ban on taxpayer funding of abortions is the will of the people, and it ought to be the will of the land," Boehner told reporters last month. "The current law, particularly as enforced by this administration, does not reflect the will of the American people."
One of Boehner's guests at Obama's State of the Union address last month was Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, D.C. The United States National Conference of Catholic Bishops has endorsed both bills.
Brown of Susan B. Anthony's List said that backing from Boehner and 80 of the 87 new House Republicans will improve their chances of getting legislation through.
NARAL's Crane looks at the diminishing numbers of abortion supporters in the House and the rising GOP numbers in the Senate and worries. While many experts believe a measure to restrict access to legalized abortion couldn't make its way from the Senate to Obama's desk, Crane isn't so sure.
She counts 40 senators who solidly support abortion rights, 46 who oppose abortion — and the rest of them sitting on the fence.
NARAL's strategy for dealing with the changing landscape: "Make sure the White House is the ultimate firewall," Crane said.

House GOP kills voting rights for D.C., Puerto Rico, other delegates - TheHill.com

The surprise vote — the first of the new Congress — surrounded a provision of the Republicans’ proposed rules package that would prevent the six House delegates from presiding over, or voting as part of, the Committee of the Whole — a mechanism used to expedite legislation by effectively turning the entire chamber into a committee.

Under the rules of the last Congress, the six delegates — representing the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands — were allowed to cast votes and preside over the Committee of the Whole. The Republican rules proposal would strip that power.

Delegates may not vote when the House is in regular order.

Psychologist Organization Protests to Gates on Bradley Manning’s Solitary Confinement

Jeff Kaye, FireDogLake, January 3, 2011

Psychologists for Social Responsibility (PsySR), a non-profit organization of psychologists committed to social change and social justice, has written a letter
to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, protesting "the needless
brutality of the conditions to which 23-year-old PFC Bradley Manning is
being subjected" at the Marine Corps brig at Quantico, Virginia. He has
been accused of unauthorized access to classified material, some of
which he allegedly downloaded to his computer, as well as other computer
and security-related charges.

It is widely speculated that these charges relate to materials turned over to the Wikileaks website, including a video of an Apache helicopter attack civilians in Baghdad, the Iraq War logs, and thousands of State Department diplomatic cables. The military charge sheet
accuses Manning of "wrongfully introducing more than 50 classified
United States Department of State cables onto his personal computer, a
non-secure information system." It also alleges he downloaded a
Powerpoint presentation, and "a classified video of a military operation
filmed at or near Baghdad, Iraq, on or about 12 July 2007."

Manning was held for
approximately three weeks at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait before being
transferred to Quantico, where he has remained in solitary confinement
since late last July. In an article
last month, I reported on PFC Manning’s current psychological state, as
best as I could determine from speaking to David House, who had just
visited him, and on the deleterious effects of solitary confinement in
general. PsySR’s letter speaks at length also about the harsh conditions
of solitary, and notes "no such putative risk can justify keeping
someone not convicted of a crime in conditions likely to cause serious
harm to his mental health."

Isolation is truly a form of
torture, and one often practiced in the so-called civilized world. A
vicious form of solitary confinement known as "Special Administrative
Measures" or SAMs were imposed by the Bush Administration Department of
Justice on Syed Fahad Hashmi,
and renewed by Attorney General Holder under President Obama. The SAMs
meant Hashmi was kept in 23-hour lockdown and isolation before trial for
three long years.

While it is used to break and
control prisoners in America’s Supermax prisons, when used on accused
prisoners, such as the detainees at Guantanamo, it can be used to
"exploit" the prisoner. Such "exploitation" is a key component of
torture programs, as the torture regime seeks not just information, but
ways to manipulate prisoners for political benefit, or for use by
intelligence agencies. Recently, Wikileaks’ Julian Assange told
Sir David Frost on Frost’s interview program that airs on English
Al-Jazeera that he believes the tortuous conditions of Manning’s
solitary confinement are meant to force Manning to implicate him in
supposed crimes against the American government. (See video of the
Assange-Frost interview here.)

After 16 Years Behind Bars for an $11 Robbery, the Scott Sisters Will Be Free at Last | Mother Jones

The following announcement was issued today by Haley Barbour, Governor of Mississippi, regarding Jamie and Gladys Scott. Mother Jones was among the first non-local media sources to report on the Scott sisters case, back in March. (The story was later covered by the AP, New York Times, and others.) The full story of their arrest and incarceration, and Jamie Scott's struggle to stay alive in prison, can be found here, with follow-ups here and here.

Dec. 29, 2010

GOV. BARBOUR’S STATEMENT REGARDING RELEASE OF SCOTT SISTERS

"Today, I have issued two orders indefinitely suspending the sentences of Jamie and Gladys Scott. In 1994, a Scott County jury convicted the sisters of armed robbery and imposed two life sentences for the crime. Their convictions and their sentences were affirmed by the Mississippi Court of Appeals in 1996.

"To date, the sisters have served 16 years of their sentences and are eligible for parole in 2014. Jamie Scott requires regular dialysis, and her sister has offered to donate one of her kidneys to her. The Mississippi Department of Corrections believes the sisters no longer pose a threat to society. Their incarceration is no longer necessary for public safety or rehabilitation, and Jamie Scott's medical condition creates a substantial cost to the State of Mississippi.

"The Mississippi Parole Board reviewed the sisters' request for a pardon and recommended that I neither pardon them, nor commute their sentence. At my request, the Parole Board subsequently reviewed whether the sisters should be granted an indefinite suspension of sentence, which is tantamount to parole, and have concurred with my decision to suspend their sentences indefinitely.

"Gladys Scott's release is conditioned on her donating one of her kidneys to her sister, a procedure which should be scheduled with urgency. The release date for Jamie and Gladys Scott is a matter for the Department of Corrections.

"I would like to thank Representative George Flaggs, Senator John Horne, Senator Willie Simmons, and Representative Credell Calhoun for their leadership on this issue. These legislators, along with former Mayor Charles Evers, have been in regular contact with me and my staff while the sisters' petition has been under review."

A group of prominent Republicans may have actually committed a crime
last month when they traveled to Paris to speak to an Iranian opposition
group that the US has deemed to be terrorists.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Homeland Security
Secretary Tom Ridge, former national security adviser Fran Townsend and
former Attorney General Michael Mukasey all attended a forum organized by supporters of Mujaheddin-e Khalq (MEK).

The MEK is a communist group that helped Saddam Hussein
carry out attacks against Iraq's Shiite population in the 1990s. The
group attacked Americans in Iran in the 1980s and helped with the 1979
takeover of the US embassy in Tehran.

The US designated the MEK a foreign terrorist organization in January 2009.

“Number 47 looks like my second-grade teacher. Number 83 resembles one of my daughters. Number 66 calls to mind my children’s grandmother. And although some faces were cropped from near-naked bodies, others were shot outdoors, wearing boots and jackets,” said LA Times Reporter, Sandy Banks, commenting on photos of unidentified Black females."
