A millionaire do nothing senator who was a former critic is a convict felon's ex-billionaire former president's running mate. |
Barely two years in and former president Donald J. Trump picks insufferable senator J.D. Vance of Ohio.
The freshman Ohio senator with barely any legislative accomplishments is going to be a MAGA loyalist. He will not question the unethical behavior and unlawful actions of a future Trump presidency.
The 39 year old Middletown, Ohio born U.S. senator is a millionaire, writer, political activist. He is married to Usha Chilukuri Vance, an Indian American professor. They have three children. They live in Cincinnati, San Francisco and Washington, DC.
Vance served in the Marine Corps before studying political science and philosophy at Ohio State University and earning a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.
He came to prominence with his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which describes his upbringing in Middletown and his family's Appalachian values[clarification needed]. It became a New York Times bestseller and later a film, and attracted significant press attention during the 2016 United States presidential election.
Vance was originally a critic of Trump, writing a critical piece about him in 2016 in The Atlantic and referring to Trump in private correspondence as "America's Hitler."
Vance later became a supporter of Trump during his presidency.
Vance launched his first political campaign in 2021 to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate. He won the Republican nomination with Trump's support and running against Democratic nominee Tim Ryan in the general election.
In the Senate, Vance has been described as a proponent of economic populism.
On social issues, Vance supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade and opposes abortion rights even in cases of rape or incest, but supports exceptions when a mother's life is in danger.
On foreign policy, Vance has opposed U.S. military aid for Ukraine.
Vance is a strong supporter of U.S. support for Israel amid the Israel–Hamas war.
He is insufferable as a lawmaker in Ohio. Certainly an insufferable vice presidential nominee.
