His previous album, the EP, 7 was released in 2019 with the smash single Old Town Road and it broke the internet. The rapper signed to Columbia Records shortly after.
Since then, he's been plotting for this debut album which will be the first full-length album. He named it MONTERO for the fact this album is personal to him. Since coming out, he's been a subject of attacks from washed up entertainers Raymond Scott, Boosie BadAzz and Glasses Malone. He also distanced himself from former collaborator DaBaby after he made his infamous homophobic rants.

The album is 15 tracks and it has production from Lil Nas X, Take a DayTrip, Fedi, Lenzo, Harris, Levesque, Slatkin, Tedder, KBeaZy, John Cunningham, Sheff, Lee, Lang, Nick Mira and DT.
