Only weeks after Jeopardy! confirmed the new hosts, one is stepping down after more controversy.

Mike Richards was selected to be the host of the long running quiz show. The game show producer and host in waiting resigned from the game show. On Friday, Richards announce he was stepping down after a series of crude comments came to light.

Comments made on a podcast in 2014 came back to haunt him. He was mocking women, Jews and Haiti.

Richards released a statement through Sony Pictures Entertainment, which produces the long-running TV game show, saying that carrying on his hosting duties would be "too much of a distraction" for fans of Jeopardy! amid the controversy swirling around past comments that were reported earlier.

Richards will continue to be the executive producer of the show.

Who will replace an icon?

"It pains me that these past incidents and comments have cast such a shadow on Jeopardy! as we look to start a new chapter.

As I mentioned last week, I was deeply honored to be asked to host the syndicated show and was thrilled by the opportunity to expand my role. However, over the last several days it has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show. As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately. As a result, we will be canceling production today.

(Sony Pictures Television) will now resume the search for a permanent syndicated host. In the meantime, we will be bringing back guest host to continue production for the new season, details of which will be announced next week.

I want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to Jeopardy! over the last few weeks and for the confusion and delays this is now causing. I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence."

They are in the running.

Richards' departure came as Jeopardy! was scheduled to premiere its new season in September.

Sony is now looking at Anderson Cooper, LeVar Burton, Aaron Rodgers, Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer for the permanent spot.

Since Alex Trebek's passing, Jeopardy! has slipped slightly in ratings.

Mayim Bialik was selected to be fill-in host and primetime host.

Richards hosted a podcast called The Randumb Show with his former producer Beth Triffon. They had made remarks on the podcast the Anti-Defamation League deemed offensive.

Richards who felt controversy earlier by a lawsuit by a former The Price is Right staffer who claimed he deliberately limited her tasks because of her pregnancy. She did settle with Fremantle Productions
