His death is felt across the globe.
As explained by Wikipedia, Hawking was the Director of Research at the Centre of Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. His scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorem in the framework of general relativity and theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often calling it Hawking radiation.
Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.
Hawking supported the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Hawking had a rare early onset of motor neurons disease. It was a slow form of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and Lou Gehrig's disease.
When he was diagnosed with the diseases, they only gave him two years to live. It would paralyze him in his later life.
After he loss the use of his voice, he communicated through a speech-generating device, through a hand-held switch and eventually a technique that used his single cheek muscle.
Hawking was praised here in the United States and Britain. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then President Barack Obama.
