Rep-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slams Fox News. |
Many Americans are struggling to eat or pay rent. I am one of those who works 50 hours a week. I am a "surprise" dad who has to travel to another city to see my son. I don't get the fancy clothes or shoes that you see on television. I make too much to qualify for food stamps, Medicaid, Pell grants and housing assistance.
Even at a minimum of $29,000 a year, the average family of four can only afford at least $1,500 in monthly expenses.
Most apartments in a metropolitan area begin at nearly $700 a month. The cost of living in Washington, DC is astronomical.
Rep-elect Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York is the youngest elected federal official in the United States. She replaces Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as the young elected member of the House of Representatives.
Ocasio Cortez said that since the election, she never had a long term job during the campaign. She said she might have to find a hotel room while waiting for her congressional salary to kick in. She admits that she can't find an affordable housing in metro DC.
Fox News took those comments and started to discuss them on America's Newsroom.
Ed Henry made the remarks.
Soon, the lawmaker shot back and made a stinging rebuke. She said that Fox News mocks the working class. She said that millions of Americans struggle to eat while paying for the rent.
Thank you all for the overwhelming outpour of support! As I mentioned, we’ve been preparing and will be fine.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 9, 2018
However, it’s been very revealing to see how gleefully Fox News hosts crack jokes about working-class people.
It reveals what they actually think about us. https://t.co/T4J9EIkoJt
1. @FoxNews, why can’t any of your anchors say my name correctly? It’s been 5 months.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 9, 2018
2. It is bizarre to see 1%-salaried anchors laugh at the US housing crisis.
3. Never purchased pricey clothes + always told my story. But repeating lies until they are believed is your thing. https://t.co/Py5aXFi3Z4
There is no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 9, 2018
Mocking lower incomes is exactly how those who benefit from + promote wealth inequality the most keep everyday people silent about 1 of the worst threats to American society: that the rich are getting richer and the poor, poorer. https://t.co/aWaOzy7UJJ
40% of ALL Americans currently struggle to pay for one basic need like food or rent.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 9, 2018
As much as @FoxNews likes to mock the working-class, the real scandal is that at the wealthiest point in our history, we are at one of our most unequal.
Most Americans are barely scraping by.
So your treasured late-stage capitalist leaders... live in public housing? https://t.co/IR1ddl4CfG— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) November 10, 2018
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, you got a challenge ahead of you. It's time to show empathy towards our fellow American.
Trump and the Republican Party have no shame or empathy towards the middle class, working class and the lower class.
