Mitch McConnell In Dire Straights!

History will not be kind to Mitch McConnell.

Addison Mitchell McConnell, 83, known as Mitch McConnell is the former Republican leader of the U.S. Senate. He is currently the senator of Kentucky. He has been in U.S. politics since the 1970s.

His first wife, a progressive activist is Shirrell Redmon of Louisville. He has three children from her. They denounced his politics and his inability to be rational.

His second wife is Elaine Chao, the former Secretary of Labor under George W. Bush and former Secretary of Transportation of President Donald J. Trump's first term. He openly said racially charged things towards her. She is Chinese American.

McConnell is currently hospitalized with flu-like symptoms and his press team says he is hoping to return to the Senate once he is released.

"In an abundance of caution, after experiencing flu-like symptoms over the weekend, Senator McConnell checked himself into a local hospital for evaluation last night," spokesman David Popp said in a statement, adding that McConnell's "prognosis is positive."

"He is grateful for the excellent care he is receiving. He is in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate business," Popp said.

McConnell, 83, announced last year that he would retire at the end of his term and would not seek re-election in 2026. His previous tenure as Senate GOP leader made him the longest-serving Senate leader in U.S. history. He is also one of the oldest sitting senators.

Concerns about McConnell's health have been raised in recent years, from his freezing on camera several times to his sustaining a concussion in December 2023. In 2019, McConnell fractured his shoulder when he tripped and fell at his home in Kentucky.

McConnell stepped down as Senate Republican leader in November 2024. Since then, he has become more willing to speak out against the Trump administration than he was during President Donald Trump's first term.

McConnell voted against three of Trump’s high-profile nominees; he was the sole Republican to vote against Tulsi Gabbard's nomination for director of national intelligence and one of three Republicans who opposed the confirmation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. McConnell also publicly criticized the tariffs at the center of Trump's economic agenda.

Two dozen members of Congress are 80 or older, and 13 of them plan to run for re-election, according to an NBC News review.

McConnell is infamous for obstructing former president Barack Obama's agenda. He wanted to make Obama a "one term" president. He literally denied Obama his third Supreme Court Justice nominee Merrick Garland. He said he will not allow a pick during an election year. He also said Republicans are the majority of the senate and have the right to do so.

Antonin Scalia died in early 2016 and McConnell vowed to deny Obama a nominee to swing the court. Once Trump won his election, he was able to pick Neil Gorsuch. He was quickly confirmed.

When Ruth Bader Ginsberg died in 2020, McConnell eagerly pushed for Trump's third nominee. The confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett, Trump's third nominee despite his denial of Obama was controversial. It played a role in the president's defeat in 2020. In an election year, McConnell openly stated he will do whatever it takes to help Trump get his nominee.

McConnell despite criticism of Trump and the Jan. 6 insurrection which lead to his second impeachment refused to hold the president accountable.

He is called the Grim Reaper of legislation. The Grim Reaper is a coming.

He will not be praised by progressive or MAGAland agitators. In fact, I am guessing some are hoping he dies soon.

Republicans will still get a seat. Under the commonwealth of Kentucky law, a sitting governor will appoint a replacement of the same party. Andy Beshear, a Democrat will likely pick a successor if McConnell does resign or die. Whether the successor runs or serves out the term, it's a Republican regardless. Kentucky lawmakers have passed a law to limit the governor's senate pick power.

Now if Beshear decides to break the Republican led state government and pick a Democrat, expect Republicans to melt down and go bonkers. He said if the Republicans keep messing with him, he might pick a Democrat.

Last week, the campaign of Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the nonvoting representative for the District of Columbia since 1991, filed paperwork indicating she will not seek re-election. Norton, 88, had faced months of pressure to announce her retirement.

There have been growing concerns over the age of lawmakers in Washington even before Democrats pressured then president Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race over concerns about his health and age.

A 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that 82% of Republicans and 76% of Democrats back an age limit for federal elected officials.

Fourteen sitting members of Congress died from 2020 to 2025, including three in both 2024 and 2025. In comparison, 12 members of Congress died from 2010 to 2019.

Doug LaMalfa is the most recent lawmaker to die in office. The Republican from California died unexpectedly. With Marjorie Taylor Greene resigning, the Republicans have with a two seat majority. Rep. Christian Menefee (D-TX) being sworn in on Wednesday.
