Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) resigns. |
Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) is out. The Arizona lawmaker announced he is resigning effective the end of the month puts Republicans in a position to pick a person who might be more Trumpish than Arizonan.
The pick is to replace the late senator most considered a "maverick."
John McCain died in August leaving his seat vacant. Gov. Doug Ducey appointed Kyl to fill the seat until a special election and then a general.
McCain supported the imbecile when it came to Neil Gorsuch, the Jobs and Tax Cuts Act, the rollback of regulations and appointments of federal judges. McCain bucked the imbecile when it came to repealing the Affordable Care Act. The two sparred over the last few years after the imbecile said that he like "people who weren't caputured."
McCain also banned him from his funeral. Before his death, McCain asked Ducey to pick a person who could relate to the people of Arizona.

Kyl who served with McCain until 2013 retired and outgoing senator Jeff Flake won the position. Flake who openly criticized Donald J. Trump faced a challenge from the right. Even though Flake supported Trump over 95% of the time, the right thought he was insufficiently conservative. Flake faced the possibility of being ousted by the right. Instead of staying, Flake announced he was retiring.
Enter Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ). Arizona Republicans felt the wind in their sails. They figured that any Republican could beat the eventual Democratic nominee. She entered the race against former state lawmaker Kelli Ward and ex-convict and former Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio. McSally managed to beat the Republican challengers and would become the nominee.
She faced Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) in this race. The Democrat was facing tough odds and a campaign of smears and dirty tactics by McSally and Trump allies.
McSally might become a senator. She might join Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) in the senate. |
Then shock of many came when they did a ballot by ballot count. It showed that McSally was dwindling in votes. It had showed that Sinema was pulling ahead. Matter of fact, Sinema would pulled a whooped of ballots erasing McSally's lead and pulling in a significant number of votes to be declared the winner.
Now in a few weeks, Sinema will be a U.S. Senator marking a first. Sinema becomes the first Democrat in over 30 years to be elected in Arizona. She will be the first woman and openly bisexual person to hold that seat.
Now that Sinema won, Kyl felt he was no longer needed. He supported the Brett Kavanaugh nomination and helped rollback regulations. Now he leaves the seat open for McSally or someone willing to hold the position until a permanent candidate announces their intention to run.
Ducey could pick McSally or Cindy McCain as the safe choice. Or he could pick a Trump supporter like Kelli Ward which pleases Trump when it comes to federal judges and Supreme Court nominees.
McSally is still a likely frontrunner.
