Dave Chappelle gets Yellow Springs to back out of development deal.
Comedian Dave Chappelle lives in the village of Yellow Springs, Ohio. The entertainer has a farm in the village. The comedian has a big impact on the town and he certainly got his way when he warned them, if Oberer decided to build housing project, he would leave.
The village heard and they understood the impact he has on the village.
The 50 acres of land that sits near Hyde Road is where Oberer wanted to build affordable housing.
Chappelle was the most outspoken member of the village opposing the development.
"I'm adamantly opposed to it, obviously live behind the development or the proposed development," Chappelle said.
Yellow Springs agreed to allowing Oberer build single family only, but not townhomes, duplexes and apartments.
Oberer eventually backed out of the deal after they found it impossible to build their request on that property.
Chappelle had invested in trying to refurbish an old firehouse and turn it into a comedy club, restaurant and community center. He said that if they build on that land, he will back out the deal and move out of the village.
Yellow Springs, Ohio is a gem.
It appears that Chappelle is considering buying the land from Oberer.
Yellow Springs, is a village in Greene County, Ohio. It is 15 miles from Dayton. Greene County is a heavily Republican county but the village of Yellow Springs is very Democratic. The village population is 4,200 residents.
Perhaps the village is the only thing progressive in the mostly rural county.
Chappelle also backed out of the naming of a theater. He also lives in Washington, DC. He pulled out of the Duke Ellington School of Art naming after he faced a backlash for The Closer. The Netflix comedy was controversial for perception of anti-transgender jokes.

Repercussions are coming
The U.S. Marshals in full force are protecting these justices. The Congress is considering legislation that provides protection and penalties for threats against the justices. Congress can't protect the children who were slain in a school and Black shoppers who were massacred by a white extremist.
The Karens of the Court decided that 49 years of right to privacy, medical decisions and safety are now the state's problem. It is not a popular decision by far.
President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Congress and the state and territorial governors will react to the decision.
The Court released its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on Friday, voting to overturn Roe v. Wade — the 1973 ruling that guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights. This most recent case, which was heard by the Court in December 2021, centered on a Mississippi law banning abortion if the "probable gestational age of the unborn human" is more than 15 weeks. This ruling comes after a draft decision document that signaled this outcome leaked on May 2.
The court’s controversial but expected ruling gives individual states the power to set their own abortion laws without concern of running afoul of Roe, which had permitted abortions during the first two trimesters of pregnancy.
Almost half the states are expected to outlaw or severely restrict abortion as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision, which is related to a highly restrictive new Mississippi abortion law.
Other states plan to maintain more liberal rules governing the termination of pregnancies.
Supporters of abortion rights immediately condemned the ruling, abortion opponents praised a decision they had long hoped for.
The court’s three liberal justices filed a dissenting opinion to the ruling, which quickly drew protestors to the Supreme Court building on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Alito wrote.
“The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment,” Alito wrote.
“That provision has been held to guarantee some rights that are not mentioned in the Constitution, but any such right must be ‘deeply rooted in this Nation’s history and tradition’ and ’implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.”
“It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives,” Alito wrote.
In their scathing joint dissent, the court’s liberal justices wrote, “The majority has overruled Roe and Casey for one and only one reason: because it has always despised them, and now it has the votes to discard them. The majority thereby substitutes a rule by judges for the rule of law.”
Roe v. Wade is gone and now the aftermath comes.
“The majority would allow States to ban abortion from conception onward because it does not think forced childbirth at all implicates a woman’s rights to equality and freedom,” said the dissent by Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.
“Today’s Court, that is, does not think there is anything of constitutional significance attached to a woman’s control of her body and the path of her life,” it said. “A State can force her to bring a pregnancy to term, even at the steepest personal and familial costs.”
The decision came a day after the Supreme Court in another controversial ruling invalidated a century-old New York law that had made it very difficult for people to obtain a license to carry a gun outside of their homes.

The case that triggered Roe’s demise, known as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, is related to a Mississippi law that banned nearly all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Dobbs was by far the most significant and controversial dispute of the court’s term.
It also posed the most serious threat to abortion rights since Planned Parenthood v. Casey, in which the Supreme Court reaffirmed Roe.
Dobbs deepened partisan divisions in a period of already intense political tribalism.
The early May leak of a draft of the majority opinion, which completely overturned Roe, sent shockwaves across the country and galvanized activists on both sides of the debate. It also cast a pall over the nation’s highest court, which immediately opened an investigation to find the source of the leak.
The publication of the court’s draft opinion, written by Alito, sparked protests from abortion-rights supporters, who were outraged and fearful about how the decision will impact both patients and providers as 22 states gear up to restrict abortions or ban them outright.
The leaked opinion marked a major victory for conservatives and anti-abortion advocates who had worked for decades to undermine Roe and Casey, which the majority of Americans support keeping in place.
But Republican lawmakers in Washington, who are hoping to win big in the November midterm elections, initially focused more on the leak itself than on what it revealed. They also decried the protests that formed outside the homes of some conservative justices, accusing activists of trying to intimidate the court.
The unprecedented leak of Alito’s draft opinion blew a hole in the cloak of secrecy normally shrouding the court’s internal affairs. It drew harsh scrutiny from the court’s critics, many of whom were already concerned about the politicization of the country’s most powerful deliberative body, where justices are appointed for life.
Roberts vowed that the work of the court “will not be affected in any way” by the leak, which he described as a “betrayal” intended to “undermine the integrity of our operations.”
The leak had clearly had an impact, however. Tall fencing was set up around the court building afterward, and Attorney General Merrick Garland directed the U.S. Marshals Service to “help ensure the Justices’ safety.”

Scott had threatened Shauna Brooks, 50 Cent, Coi Leray, Royce Da 5'9", Em and his "stan army" online. He has feuded with Lil Nas X, Merkules, The Evolve and NoLifeShaq.
Wack 100 had to own up to the allegations once he saw Scott using the sex toy.
He addressed it on Clubhouse. Scott tried to deny it and made silly excuses to what happened. He said that he was in the presence of women when he was pleasuring himself.
Wack said that the stories don't match up, because he has a video of man using a dildo on himself, and if you look into the arms of that said person, the tattoos matched Scott's.

The culture wars continue with the Supreme Court. These six nimrods will get protection for LIFE knowing that these stupid decisions will immediately trigger possible violence.
This decision will now void state laws that restricted conceal carry access are now voided.
The Court ruled 6-3 in the New York law that restricted conceal carry access in state. The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen required anyone who wants to carry a concealed handgun outside the home to show “proper cause” for the license.
New York courts interpreted that phrase to require applicants to show more than a general desire to protect themselves or their property. Instead, applicants must demonstrate a special need for self-defense.
President Joe Biden said in a statement he was “deeply disappointed” by the Supreme Court ruling, which he said “contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should deeply trouble us all.”
He urged states to pass new laws and said, “I call on Americans across the country to make their voices heard on gun safety. Lives are on the line.”
In the opinion itself, Justice Crispy Thomas wrote for the majority that the Constitution protects “an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.”
The decision struck down a New York law requiring people to demonstrate a particular need for carrying a gun in order to get a license to carry one in public. The justices said that requirement violates the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.”
California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island all have similar laws. The Biden administration had urged the justices to uphold New York’s law.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the ruling comes at a particularly painful time, when New York is still mourning the deaths of 10 people in a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo. “This decision isn’t just reckless. It’s reprehensible. It’s not what New Yorkers want,” she said.
But Tom King, president of the plaintiff New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, said he was relieved.
“The lawful and legal gun owner of New York State is no longer going to be persecuted by laws that have nothing to do with the safety of the people and will do nothing to make the people safer,” he said. “And maybe now we’ll start going after criminals and the perpetrator of these heinous acts.”
In a court dissent joined by his liberal colleagues, Justice Stephen Breyer focused on the toll taken by gun violence. “Since the start of this year alone (2022), there have already been 277 reported mass shootings—an average of more than one per day,“ Breyer wrote.
Backers of New York’s law had argued that striking it down would lead to more guns on the streets and higher rates of violent crime. Gun violence, which was already on the rise during the coronavirus pandemic has spiked anew.
In most of the country gun owners have little difficulty legally carrying their weapons in public. But that had been harder to do in New York and the handful of states with similar laws. New York’s law, which has been in place since 1913, says that to carry a concealed handgun in public, a person applying for a license has to show “proper cause,” a specific need to carry the weapon.
The state issues unrestricted licenses where a person can carry their gun anywhere and restricted licenses that allow a person to carry the weapon but just for specific purposes such as hunting and target shooting or to and from their place of business.
The Supreme Court last issued a major gun decision in 2010. In that decision and a ruling from 2008 the justices established a nationwide right to keep a gun at home for self-defense. The question for the court this time was about carrying one outside the home.
The challenge to the New York law was brought by the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, which describes itself as the nation’s oldest firearms advocacy organization, and two men seeking an unrestricted ability to carry guns outside their homes.
The court’s decision is somewhat out of step with public opinion. About half of voters in the 2020 presidential election said gun laws in the U.S. should be made more strict, according to AP VoteCast, an expansive survey of the electorate. An additional third said laws should be kept as they are, while only about 1 in 10 said gun laws should be less strict.
This next hearing will deal with the former president trying to push DOJ to help him win his election.
Today is the Jan. 6 hearing. This will be the last hearing for the month. The House Select Committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol is planning on resuming its session in July.
On Tuesday, Americans listen to testimony from Republican state officials and a Georgia mother and daughter.

Now it reported that the committee members are getting extra protection after the last testimony.
New York rapper was seriously injured in an attempted robbery in New Jersey. The terrorists were caught. Many fear that Lil TJay may not survive his injuries.
The entertainer was shot multiple times and another man was also wounded during an attempted armed robbery early Wednesday in New Jersey, according to officials.
The suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, which is handling the investigation, said gunfire erupted at a Chipotle restaurant at a residential and outdoor shopping center in Edgewater.
The Edgewater Police Department responded to a 911 call about the shooting at 12:08 a.m. and found Lil Tjay, 21, whose legal name is Tione Jayden Merritt, with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the prosecutor’s office.
The other victim, Antoine Boyd, 22, was found at an Exxon gas station about a mile from the Chipotle, with a single gunshot wound, authorities said.
Investigators determined that suspect, 27 year old from New York, “attempted to commit armed robbery” against Lil Tjay, and two people he was with a 24-year old man from the Bronx, New York, and the other shooting victim when the shooting occurred, according to the prosecutor's office.
Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the New York City Police Department on Wednesday arrested the terrorist on three counts of attempted murder, three counts of armed robbery and other weapons charges, the release stated. He is pending extradition to New Jersey.
The terrorists were also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, officials said.
They were remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first court appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, New Jersey, according to the release.
Lawyer information for the three was not immediately available.
Both victims were taken to a hospital where they were treated. TMZ was the first to report that Lil Tjay was shot and undergoing emergency surgery Wednesday.
NBC News has reached out to his representatives for comment.
Following news of the shooting, rapper French Montana tweeted "pray for my lil bro lil Tjay."
In an update Wednesday, officials said one critically injured victim was stable. The other victim had non-life threatening injuries and was in good condition.
Lil Tjay posted on his Instagram story Tuesday: “PSA Just because you’ve been around a person doesn’t make you entitled to the fruits of that persons labor. Envy is at an all time high be safe outchea.”
Lil Tjay, who hails from The Bronx in New York City, rose to prominence in 2018 with the song “Resume” and signed with Columbia Records.
The artist, who has over 7 million followers on Instagram and more than 17 million listeners on Spotify, is known for hits like "Calling My Phone" with 6lack and "In My Head." He was featured on Polo G's song "Pop Out," which hit No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and Pop Smoke's "Mood Swings."
Every community in the United States will eventually have a legacy. A legacy of tragedy. Gun violence and COVID-19 will affect your town, your family and your life. So I don't want to hear that bullshit about how gun reform is taking away your rights to own firearms.

I just clicked on a piece from Mediaite and the writer who I will not name wrote "Kamala Harris’ Press Secretary Claims VP Shot ‘Nothing But Net’ in North Korean-Style Disinformation Tweet" and almost immediately I thought about MSNBC's progressive agitator Joy Reid mentioning the numerous stories aimed at Vice President Kamala Harris.
They have mentioned the vice president only by name instead of her formal title.
They have attacked her for her laugh, her travels, her marriage to Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, her Blackness, her record as a senator, California Attorney General, San Francisco District Attorney and numerous events she attended as Vice President of the United States.
The writer wrote Kirsten Allen, the press secretary for Vice President Kamala Harris, spread North Korean-style disinformation on Twitter Wednesday.

Lawmakers released the 80-page bill nine days after agreeing to a framework for the plan and 29 years after Congress last enacted major firearms curbs. It cleared an initial procedural hurdle by 64-34, with 14 Republicans joining all 48 Democrats and two allied independents in voting yes. That strongly supported a prediction by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) of approval later this week. Passage by the Democratic-led House could follow quickly.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) had one more road to cross. A floor vote.
Though Republicans blocked tougher restrictions sought by Democrats, the accord marks an election-year breakthrough on an issue that pits the GOP’s staunch gun-owning and rural voters against Democrats’ urban-centered backers of firearms curbs. That makes it one of the most incendiary culture war battlefields in politics and a sensitive vote for some lawmakers, particularly Republicans who might alienate Second Amendment stalwarts.
The legislation would toughen background checks for the youngest firearms buyers, require more sellers to conduct background checks and beef up penalties on gun traffickers. It also would disburse money to states and communities to improve school safety and mental health initiatives.
Aides estimated the measure would cost around $15 billion, which Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, the lead Democratic bargainer, said would be fully paid for.
Resolving one final hurdle that delayed the accord, the bill would prohibit romantic partners convicted of domestic violence and not married to their victims from getting firearms. Convicted abusers who are married to, live with or had children with their victims are already barred from having guns.
The compromise prohibits guns for a person who has “a current or recent former dating relationship with the victim.” That is defined in part as one between people ”who have or have recently had a continuing serious relationship of a romantic or intimate nature.” An offender’s ability to own a gun could be restored after five years if they’ve not committed another serious crime.
On another late dispute, the bill would provide $750 million to the 19 states and the District of Columbia that have “red flag” laws making it easier to temporarily take firearms from people adjudged dangerous, and to other states with violence prevention programs. States with “red flag” laws that receive the funds would have to have legal processes for the gun owner to fight the firearm’s removal.

Momentum in Congress for gun legislation has a history of waning quickly after mass shootings. Lawmakers are scheduled to begin a two-week July 4th recess by this weekend.
The legislation lacks far more potent proposals that President Joe Biden supports and Democrats have pushed unsuccessfully for years, derailed by GOP opposition. These include banning assault-type weapons or raising the minimum age for buying them, prohibiting high-capacity magazines and requiring background checks for virtually all gun sales.
Yet after 10 Black shoppers were killed last month in Buffalo, New York, and 19 children and two teachers died days later in Uvalde, Texas, Democrats and some Republicans decided that this time, measured steps were preferable to Congress’ usual reaction to such horrors — gridlock.
Murphy said that after Buffalo and Uvalde, “I saw a level of fear on the faces of the parents and the children that I spoke to that I’ve never seen before.” He said his colleagues also encountered anxiety among voters “not just for the safety of their children, but also a fear about the ability of government to rise to this moment and do something, and do something meaningful.”
This bill, Murphy said, would “save thousands of lives.” Before entering the Senate, his House district included Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six staff members perished in a 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Cornyn said of the pact, “Some think it goes too far, others think it doesn’t go far enough. And I get it. It’s the nature of compromise.”
But he added, “I believe that the same people who are telling us to do something are sending us a clear message, to do what we can to keep our children and communities safe. I’m confident this legislation moves us in a positive direction.”
In a positive sign about its fate, McConnell ,voiced his support, calling it “a commonsense package of popular steps that will help make these horrifying incidents less likely while fully upholding the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.”
The National Rifle Association, which has spent decades derailing gun control legislation, expressed opposition. “It falls short at every level. It does little to truly address violent crime while opening the door to unnecessary burdens on the exercise of Second Amendment freedom by law-abiding gun owners,” the gun lobby group said.
It seemed likely a majority of Republicans — especially in the House — would oppose the legislation.
Underscoring the backlash GOP lawmakers supporting the pact would face from the most hard-right voters, delegates booed Cornyn at his state’s Republican convention in Houston Saturday as he described the proposal.
In another measure of conservative sentiment, Sen. Karen Hawley of Missouri, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, tweeted that the bill “ignores the national crime wave & chips away instead at the fundamental rights of law abiding citizens.” Sen. Karen Cotton (R-AK) a possible White House contender, said it would “restrict the freedoms of law-abiding Americans and put too much power in the hands of politicians and political officials.”
The measure will need at least 10 GOP votes to reach the 60-vote threshold major bills often need in the 50-50 Senate. Cornyn told reporters that he expected at least 10 GOP votes for the measure.
What’s uncertain is whether passage would mark the beginning of slow but gradual action to curb gun violence, or the high water mark on the issue. Until Buffalo and Uvalde, a numbing parade of mass slayings — at sites including elementary and high schools, houses of worship, military facilities, bars and the Las Vegas Strip — have yielded only stalemate in Washington.
“Thirty years, murder after murder, suicide after suicide, mass shooting after mass shooting, Congress did nothing,” Murphy said. “This week we have a chance to break this 30-year period of silence with a bill that changes our laws in a way that will save thousands of lives.”
The bill would require that federal background checks for gun buyers age 18 to 20 include examination of the purchaser’s juvenile record. That could add up to seven more days to the current three-day limit on background checks.
The suspects in the Buffalo and Uvalde shootings were both 18 years old, a profile that matches many recent mass shooters.
There would be hundreds of millions of dollars to expand community behavioral health centers, telemedicine visits for mental specialists and train first responders to handle people with mental health issues. More than $2 billion would be provided to hire and train staff for school mental health services, including $300 million to improve school safety.
Congress’ prohibited assault-type firearms in 1993 in a ban that expired after a decade, lawmakers’ last sweeping legislation addressing gun violence.

After weeks, the primary challenger finally concedes to Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX).
Jessica Cisneros is now the Nina Turner of Texas politics. The former intern of Ceullar ran against him twice and hoped this time she would defeat him. The run off and recount is over. Cisneros tried to label Cuellar as a Republican even though he is a Democrat. She did what Turner tried to do to Rep. Shontel Brown (D-OH).
Cuellar is officially the Democratic nominee. He will face off against a Republican in a competitive race.
His original lead had been tabulated at 281 votes, but during the recount he picked up more votes in Jim Hogg and Starr County, the more rural and Cuellar-friendly parts of the sprawling southern Texas district.
The win is Cuellar's narrowest victory over Cisneros, who unsuccessfully challenged Cuellar for his seat in the 2020 primary as well.
Cuellar is the most conservative Democrat in the House caucus. Nonetheless, he has voted with President Joe Biden about 92% of time. The only issues he has with Biden is abortion and immigration.
Pelosi backs the incumbent candidates regardless of their policies.
Cuellar's victory came amid several controversies, including an FBI investigation that led to raids of Cuellar's Laredo, Texas, home and campaign office. Cuellar's attorney has said the congressman is not the target of the FBI investigations. The FBI has neither confirmed or denied Cuellar's involvement to CBS News.
Cuellar's stance on abortion also became a clear point of contrast between him and Cisneros after a draft opinion from U.S. Supreme Court that would overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked.
In a statement Tuesday, Cuellar said he was always confident his election night lead would hold and that he will work to reach out to the more progressive voters in his district, which recently was redrawn to include more of San Antonio.
"While we may differ on certain positions, we share a common ground on many issues to improve our communities and strengthen families. It is now time to come together and win the General Election in November," he said.
"I am an American, Texan then a Democrat — in that order — and I will continue to fight for Texas values and not let coastal elites bring their failed agenda to our communities," he added.
Cisneros conceded shortly after the official recount results were released. In a statement, she said she was "up against a corrupt political machine," and pointed to spending by outside groups such as the United Democracy Project, a group affiliated with the pro-Israel American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which spent at least $1.8 million in independent expenditures in the race.
The Bernie Sanders curse doomed Cisneros.
"With this close of a margin, it's clear that without their aggressive interference in the lives of South Texas families, we would have won," Cisneros said in her statement. "We're going to keep fighting to create a more progressive and accountable Democratic Party this year and work to turn Texas blue in November."
Progressive groups backing Cisneros such as Justice Democrats also criticized the outside spending, as well as the House Democratic leadership's support for Cuellar, who received endorsements from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jim Clyburn, both of whom appeared at a campaign event with Cuellar in the closing weeks of the contest.
"The party establishment would rather protect one of their own than deliver results for Democratic voters and South Texas families," said Justice Democrats Executive Director Alexandra Rojas. "They would rather discourage more young, working-class women of color like Jessica from running for office. It's disgraceful and I am deeply worried about November."
Cuellar will now face Republican nominee Karen Garcia in the November general election, as Republicans turn their eye towards unseating the longtime border district incumbent. Republicans are optimistic about their chances, pointing to Republican Mayra Flores' special election win in Texas' nearby 34th District earlier in June.
The House GOP-backed Congressional Leadership Fund has reserved at least $3.5 million in advertising for the district in the fall. The National Republican Congressional Committee has also reserved a similar amount in T.V. ads that would air in the 28th District, as well as the neighboring 15th District.

This candidate will likely be the first woman to serve as an Alabama senator.
Karen Britt won the Republican nomination for Senate in Alabama on Tuesday, defeating the six-term Brooks in a primary runoff after Washed Up 45 took the unusual step of rescinding his endorsement of Brooks.
The loss ends a turbulent campaign for Brooks, a conservative firebrand who fully embraced the former president's election lies and had run under the banner “MAGA Mo.” But it wasn’t enough for the former president, who initially backed Brooks in the race to replace Britt’s former boss, retiring Shelby, but then pulled his support as Brooks languished in the polls.
Washed Up 45 eventually endorsed Britt in the race’s final stretch after she emerged as the top vote-getter in the state’s May 24 primary. She will face Democrat Will Boyd in November in the overwhelmingly Republican state.
The race was among a handful of contests held Tuesday at the midpoint of a primary season that has been shaped by the former president’s effort to influence the GOP.
While Britt was already considered the favorite by the time Washed Up 45 got behind her, the result gives the former president a win at a time his influence over the GOP has come under scrutiny. The former president has had a mixed record of success in backing candidates this election season, helping lift Senate candidates in Pennsylvania and Ohio while floundering elsewhere, particularly in Georgia. Voters in the onetime Republican stronghold rejected his efforts to unseat the state’s GOP governor and secretary of state, both of whom rebuffed his extraordinary pressure to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Washed Up 45’s losing streak in Georgia, a crucial swing state this year and in the 2024 presidential campaign, deepened Tuesday as two of his endorsed congressional candidates faltered in their GOP run-off elections.
In the 6th District in Atlanta’s northern suburbs, emergency room physician Karem McCormick beat Washed Up 45-backed lawyer Karen Evans. And in the 10th District east of Atlanta, trucking company owner Karen Collins bested Democrat-turned-Republican Vernon Jones.
The former president had persuaded Jones to run for the seat and drop his long-shot bid for governor to clear the field for his chosen candidate, former Sen. Karen Perdue. Perdue lost to Republican Gov. Karen Kemp, who endorsed Collins. The seat is being vacated by Republican Rep. Karen Hice, who also lost his bid to unseat Republican Secretary of State Karen Raffensperger, another top Karen target.
Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser won the Democratic nomination to serve another term, fending off a pair of challengers amid concerns over rising crime and homelessness.

But the Alabama Senate runoff had drawn particular attention because of the drama surrounding Washed Up 45’s endorsement. The former president initially endorsed Brooks in the spring of 2021, rewarding an ardent champion of his baseless claims of a stolen election. Brooks had voted against certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential election victory and delivered a fiery speech at the rally before the U.S. Capitol insurrection, telling the crowd, “Today is the day that American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass.”
But nearly a year later, the former president rescinded his support after the pair’s relationship soured and as Brooks languished in the polls. The former president blamed his decision on comments Brooks had made months earlier, at an August rally, when he said it was time for the party to move on from litigating the 2020 presidential race — comments Washed Up 45 claimed showed Brooks, one of the most conservative members of Congress, had gone “woke.”
Brooks, who is known for his bombastic oratory style, has described the primary race as a battle for the soul of Republican Party, pitting the “true conservative” wing against establishment members of the GOP. He disparaged Britt, 40, as a RINO — the GOP pejorative meaning “Republican in name only” — and maintained he was the only one with a proven conservative record.
The founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus also made his opposition to Opposition Leader Karen McConnell a pillar of his campaign, embarking on a “Fire McConnell Tour” of town halls.
In his concession speech Tuesday night, Brooks told supporters he respected the race’s outcome. But in a sign of the contentious race, he accused voters of having been seduced by false advertising and congratulated high-dollar donors and “special interest groups” for funding Britt’s campaign.
“We are sending to Washington, D.C., the exact opposite of what we need in the United States Senate. But the voters have spoken. They might not have spoken wisely,” he groused.
Britt, meanwhile, cast herself as part of a new generation of conservative leaders while disparaging Brooks, 68, as a career politician. If victorious in November, Britt will be the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Alabama and one of its youngest members. The state’s previous female senators had been appointed.
“Alabama has spoken. We want new blood. We want fresh blood,” she said at her victory party. “We want someone who will fight for Christian conservative values, who will fight for the freedoms and liberties this nation was founded on and will fight for the American dream for the next generation and the next generation.”
That argument seemed to resonate with some voters Tuesday.
“She’s young. She’s smart,” said 86-year-old Carolyn Bowman. “That’s what we need in Congress.”
In Virginia, Republicans were choosing between Washed Up 45-aligned congressional candidates to take on some of the most vulnerable Democrats in the fall.
In the coastal 2nd District, state Sen. Karen Kiggans won the Republican race to try to unseat Virginia Democrat Rep. Elaine Luria, a retired Naval commander and member of the Jan. 6 committee, in the general election. In central Virginia’s 7th District, six candidates are in a competitive race to face Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer.
At the polls Tuesday in Virginia Beach, Nanci Eves, 70, said she voted for Kiggans in part because she believes the candidate is best positioned to win in November.
“We need someone who can beat Elaine Luria,” said Eves, a retired nurse who lives in Virginia Beach and who thinks Democrats have made “a mess” of the country while in power.
In Georgia, Democratic state Rep. Bee Nguyen defeated former state Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler in the secretary of state’s race. Nguyen will face Republican Raffensperger, who rebuffed the former president’s efforts to “find” enough votes to overturn Biden’s win in the state’s 2020 presidential election and beat back a Washed Up 45-endorsed challenger in his May 24 primary.
The Court is turning back the country's seperation of church and state.
The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Maine can’t exclude religious schools from a program that offers tuition aid for private education, a decision that could ease religious organizations’ access to taxpayer money.
The 6-3 outcome could fuel a renewed push for school choice programs in some of the 18 states that have so far not directed taxpayer money to private, religious education. The most immediate effect of the court’s ruling beyond Maine probably will be felt next door in Vermont, which has a similar program
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for a conservative majority that the program violates the Constitution’s protections for religious freedoms.
“Maine’s ‘nonsectarian’ requirement for its otherwise generally available tuition assistance payments violates the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. Regardless of how the benefit and restriction are described, the program operates to identify and exclude otherwise eligible schools on the basis of their religious exercise,” Roberts wrote.
The court’s three liberal justices dissented. “This Court continues to dismantle the wall of separation between church and state that the Framers fought to build,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote.
Justice Stephen Breyer noted in a separate dissent that Maine “wishes to provide children within the State with a secular, public education. This wish embodies, in significant part, the constitutional need to avoid spending public money to support what is essentially the teaching and practice of religion.”
The ruling is the latest in a line of decisions from the Supreme Court that have favored religion-based discrimination claims. The court is separately weighing the case of a football coach who says he has a First Amendment right to pray at midfield immediately after games.
In largely rural Maine, the state allows families who live in towns that don’t have public schools to receive public tuition dollars to send their children to the public or private school of their choosing. The program has excluded religious schools.
Students who live in a district with public schools or in a district that contracts with another public system are ineligible for the tuition program.
Parents who challenged the program argued that the exclusion of religious schools violates their religious rights under the Constitution. Teacher unions and school boards said states can impose limits on public money for private education without running afoul of religious freedoms.
Michael Bindas, a lawyer for the libertarian Institute for Justice who argued for the parents at the high court, said the court made clear Tuesday that “there is no basis for this notion that the government is able to single out and exclude religious options.”
Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, sharply criticized the court for “forcing taxpayers to fund religious education” and cloaking “this assault on our Constitution in the language of non-discrimination.”
In the Maine case, parents sued in federal court to be able to use state aid to send their children to Christian schools in Bangor and Waterville. The schools in question, Bangor Christian School and Temple Academy, are uncertain whether they would accept public funds, according to court filings.
The Bangor school said it would not hire teachers or admit students who are transgender. Both schools said they do not hire gay or lesbian teachers, according to court records.
In 2020, the high court ruled 5-4 that states must give religious schools the same access to public funding that other private schools receive, preserving a Montana scholarship program that had largely benefited students at religious institutions.
In that case, the court said states don’t have to allow public money to be used in private education. But they can’t keep religious schools out of such programs, once created.
But even after that ruling, the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the Maine program, holding that the state was not violating anyone’s constitutional rights by refusing to allow taxpayer money to be used for religious instruction. The three-judge panel included retired Justice David Souter, who occasionally hears cases in the appeals court.
Most of the justices attended religious schools, and several send or have sent their children to them.
Today, the House Committee Investigating the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol will be held today.
The committee will talk to prominent Republicans who engaged with Washed Up 45. They are going to testify to the public that the former president tried to pressure them to throw out votes and not certify states for Joe Biden.
What is expected is testimony and evidence to prove the former president tried to deliberate change an outcome of the 2020 election. He pressured Republican leaders, former vice president Karen R. Pence and far-right media figures to get the message out that the election was stolen.
He cheered on the threats towards Pence, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Karen Romney (R-UT).
He already blasted the committee hearings as "witch hunt."
Pence wants to "move on" despite his life being in danger and the former president calling him a "pussy" for not caving to an illegal act.
