Tawanda Crowell hired Benjamin Crump to handle a matter that involved the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and a local Publix. The incident happened last week and it's getting national attention.

Publix workers called the law on a woman. They claimed that she shoplifted out of a store. It turns out they made a mistake. Now she's suing.

Crowell was leaving a Publix in Jacksonville when she was stopped by a metro police officer. The officer got a call on a report of shoplifting and they fingered Crowell as the person involved.

So he approaches her vehicle and ask for the woman to show her receipt. The situation quickly escalated when Crowell said that she didn't steal from the store and she doesn't have to show a receipt.

The cop gave her multiple times to show the receipt and warned her if she didn't comply she would be arrested. Crowell again stated that she didn't steal and demanded to see his supervisor and stated that she was wrongly detained. She said that she would go into the store with the cop to prove to the store that she didn't steal.

The situation would turn into an arrest. The cop deploys his Taser. It shocks Crowell and she falls on her face. Crowell was reportedly shocked with a Taser and knocked to the ground in front of her young goddaughter and nieces. She had a receipt for her purchase.

She would soon be arrested and forced to spend a night in the Duval County lockup. The state prosecutor dropped the case against her.

The cop was cleared of any wrongdoing. JSO has since identified the officer as Officer K. Munger. 

"This incident and actions by the officer were investigated by the Internal Affairs Unit by way of a formal complaint," said The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "Officer K. Munger’s actions were cleared by way of the body-worn camera video."

Now that she is out of the county, she hired an attorney and is suing the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and Publix for the whole ordeal.

Crump left Minneapolis to come to Jacksonville. He is the lawyer for George Floyd's family.

The lawsuit alleged that Crowell told the officer that he lacked probable cause to ask for her grocery receipt and did not give it to him for fear he might destroy it. 

Crowell was then shocked with a Taser and knocked to the ground in front of her young goddaughter and nieces, the lawsuit alleges.

Attorney Benjamin Crump says that although the arresting officer found the receipt verifying her purchase of the food, she was still arrested and was jailed for 24 hours. 

Publix's communications director for Florida responded to First Coast News' request for comment in an email: "We do not comment on pending litigation."
