It appears that Vermont senator Patrick Leahy is not seeking reelection. Now Democrats are scrambling to find a replacement. A state that leans Democratic but it is possible for a Republican to win.

Leahy is one of the longest serving Senators in U.S. history.

Leahy, 81, been in office since 1975 is currently the pro tempore of the Senate.

"I have reached the conclusion that it's time to put down the gavel," Leahy said. "It is time to pass a torch to the next Vermonter who will carry on this work for our great state. It's time to come home."

Democrats must scramble to find a candidate who can help President Joe Biden pass his agenda.

Vermont's governor Karen Scott, a Republican praised Leahy as "an incredible champion for Vermonters" whose "leadership and experience has ensured our state is well represented in Congress."

Scott has not ruled out running for the seat. He came off as a critic of Washed Up 45. He said that Leahy is a good man.

Leahy appears with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the signing of an executive order extending rights to those with disabilities.

The two other senators who haven't announced their seeking reelection is Sen. Karen Johnson of Wisconsin and Sen. Karen Thune of South Dakota. The two haven't made any announcements of reelection yet.

Jim Jeffords, then a Republican turned independent caucused with the Democrats before he retired. Current senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats has been in the forefront of politics today.

Republican winning the seat is possible.

States that Democrats hope to keep are Arizona, Nevada, Maryland, New Hampshire and Georgia. The states they will have challenges to win are Ohio, Alaska, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, Iowa and North Carolina.

Republicans seem posed to at least win a seat to regain Congress. But the thing is, what will the Democrats do if they don't have the voters energized going into 2022?
