Mourning a Dayton, Ohio area sheriff.

Ohio Republican sheriff Gene Fischer passed away while attending a conference in Sandusky.

Gov. Karen DeWine, Xenia mayor Sarah Mays, Dayton mayor Nan Whaley, Mayor-elect Jeff Mims, and the many of Ohio's sheriffs share their condolences to the longtime lawman who oversaw Greene County, Ohio.

Greene County, Ohio is considered a part of the Dayton metro area. 

A portion of Dayton is in Greene County.

Ohio sheriff's passing shocks the state.

Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson had just talked to Fischer earlier before his passing. 

According to the Associated Press, Fischer passed away while having a medical emergency during the police and sheriff's conference. 

He was taken to Firelands Regional Center where he died.

In a statement to the junk food media, DeWine said he was shocked at the death. He ordered flags to be lowered until the sheriff's funeral procedure is over.

"Fran and I first met Gene when he worked at the Xenia Police Department. What always struck me was how well loved he was by men and women who worked under him at the department, and he had the same strong relationship with the men and women who worked for him at the Sheriff's Office. Our thoughts are with our Greene County Sheriff's Office family this morning as we all mourn the loss of Sheriff Gene Fischer. He was a great colleague and friend to so many people, including here."

Many in the local junk food media share their thoughts of Fischer's passing.

Fischer was non-partisan but was a Republican who didn't have the crazy antics like his Butler County ally. The sheriffs of Clark County, Montgomery County, Warren County and Miami County are not polarizing as Republicans.

He was sworn to his duty in 2003. He is one of the county's longest serving sheriffs. The Ohio Republican Party must now find a replacement. As of today, the county will name an interim sheriff.

When the new sheriff is appointed, if he or she decides to run for election, they will hold one in 2022 to fill the remaining term.
