Buffalo sits on the banks of the Niagara River and Lake Erie.

The city of Buffalo, New York has a population of 243,000 residents. It's the second largest city in the state of New York. It's part of the Rust Belt. 

I was there back in 2016 and traveled on Interstate 190 to Niagara Falls. The city sits on the Niagara River. It's located in Western New York and is only three hours away from Cleveland, two hours from Toronto and four hours away from Pittsburgh.

Besides Detroit, Buffalo is one of the largest municipalities that sits on the U.S.-Canadian border.

Democrat India B.Walton, a self-described socialist defeated a longtime mayor of the city. Walton pulled an upset on the city’s four-term mayor in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

Walton beat Mayor Byron Brown, 52 percent to 45 percent, with 100 percent of precincts reporting. The Associated Press called the race late Wednesday morning.

“I believe we won because we organized. We have a message of care love and hope that is resonant with working class Buffalo," Walton told MSNBC's Ayman Mohyeldin on Wednesday.

If Walton, 39, wins the general election in November, she will become the first socialist mayor of a large American city since 1960, when Frank Zeidler left office in Milwaukee. Her chances of winning are high since Buffalo hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1965.

“This victory is ours. It is the first of many,” she told a crowd of her supporters Tuesday night as election results rolled in. “If you are in an elected office right now, you are being put on notice. We are coming."

After declaring victory, Walton called her mother by phone and was seen in a video recorded by The Buffalo News celebrating: “Mommy, I won. Mommy, I’m the mayor of Buffalo. Well, not until January, but, yeah.”

Buffalo mayor Bryon Brown is not conceding. He will mount a write-in campaign.

Walton has worked as a nurse and community activist in Buffalo and had never run for elected office.

Brown, 62, did not concede Tuesday night, saying the race was too close to call. He has served as Buffalo’s mayor since 2006 and previously was chair of the New York Democratic Party and a member of the state Legislature. The Buffalo News reported he's weighing a write-in campaign against Walton.

There is no Republican candidate in the race.

Walton told MSNBC that if elected in the fall, her "priority is putting resources in neighborhoods and really tackling the issue of poverty. Buffalo is the third poorest city of our size in the country. It is unacceptable.”

Walton had struggles. She is the daughter of Doris Siddiq and Louis Kelly in Buffalo. She attended Lorraine Elementary and Leonardo da Vinci High School. Walton gave birth to her first child when she was fourteen, and lived in a home for young mothers in Lackawanna, New York. She married Vernon Walton Jr. and left high school after giving birth to twin sons at the age of nineteen. Walton later earned a General Educational Development certificate and graduated with a nursing degree from SUNY Erie. 

She then gave birth to another son.

Walton, a registered nurse, activist and mother of four is likely to be the mayor of Buffalo, New York.

Walton became active in politics at the age of twelve when she protested Rockefeller Drug Laws with her mother as part of the activist group Families Against Mandatory Minimums. While working as a nurse, she served as a representative for 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.

She was active in the George Floyd protests, and criticized Mayor Byron Brown for his handling of the Buffalo police shoving incident.

The Republicans have no candidate running for mayor so if Brown's write-in campaign fails, Walton will become the first American socialist mayor in over 60 years.
