President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day into federal law. It will be June 19 and it will be a federal holiday.
"Juneteenth marks both the long, hard night of slavery and subjugation and a promise of brighter morning to come. This is a day of profound weight and profound power, a day in which we remember the moral stain and the terrible toil that slavery took on the country -- and continue to take."
Besides Biden, in attendance were Vice President Kamala Harris, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA), Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-IL), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Usher, Pharrell Williams, Common and a very special guest.
That special guest worked her entire adult life to see this happen.
Opal Lee was in attendance of this momental day. She is a 94-year old activist who the president recognized for her push to make Juneteenth a national holiday.

The bill sponsor, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) pushed very hard for a sweeping bipartisan bill.
It cleared the Senate with nearly unanimous support. It clear the House with only 14 white nationalists opposing it.
Harris, then as a senator, Booker along with Washed Up 45 and Sen. Karen Scott (R-SC) pushed for it in the senate. It was on the table back in 2019 and 2020.
The former president lost support with Black people when he failed to take awareness to police brutality, systematic racism and economic segregation.
Biden will earn the rights to creating a national holiday. Republicans will try to rewrite history by asserting that the former president had originally came up with the idea.
The vice president said that the country needs to still push for racial equality.
"We are gathered here in a house built by enslaved people. We are footsteps away from where President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. And we are here to witness President Joe Biden establish Juneteenth as a national holiday."
Harris added, "We have came so far. And we have far to go. This is a day of celebration....Granted, it's also a day for us to reaffirm and rededicate ourselves to action."
"So as we commemorate the history of Juneteenth, as we did just weeks ago with the history of the Tulsa race massacre, we must learn from our history and we must teach our children our history, because it is part of our history as a nation -- it is part of American history. And with that,, I say, Happy Juneteenth everybody!"
Opal Lee lived to see this day.
