In 2020, a Black man was slammed to the ground by a Valdosta, Georgia police officer. It was an incident where the cops accused the man of being another guy with a warrant. When he told them, he wasn't the guy, the cop decided to take him down hard. I think I remember he lost a couple of teeth and had facial injuries due to that takedown.

The Valdosta City Council approved a federal settlement to the victim. Antonio Arnelo Smith sued the city and the police department in federal court for violating his civil rights, excessive force and unlawful arrest.

The dirty cop slammed him to the ground was identified as Sgt. Billy Wheeler. He was named in the lawsuit as well as mayor Scott J. Matheson, police chief Leslie Manahan and assisting cop Dominic Henry.

Antonio Smith was pinned to the ground by three white cops.

Two other officers Patrick Barrett and Hudson Durden were named in the lawsuit.

A body camera recording the incident shows Smith talking cooperatively with a Black cop as white cop Wheeler came up behind him, pinned Smith's hands behind his back and threw him face-first to the ground.

"Oh my god, you broke my wrist!" Smith said on the video as two more white cops held him down and handcuffed him. The cop told Smith that he was being arrested for an outstanding warrant, another cop interjected and said he was the wrong guy.

Police did not charge him.

Ashlyn Johnson, a spokesperson for the Valdosta City Hall said that the $350,000 settlement will end the lawsuit. The city also agreed that they will create a panel on how to deal with police encounters.
