The death of a South Carolina man echoes Sandra Bland. The death has the U.S. Justice Department looking into whether the Charleston County Sheriff's office abused their power.

The death of Jamal Sutherland, 31 is now being covered by the junk food media. He died in January 2021 but the video release of his detainment at the Sheriff Al Cannon lock up is getting attention.

Officers with the North Charleston Police Department were called out to the Palmetto Behavioral Health in early January. Officers were called on a report of a "large scale fight [that] had erupted among patients and staff, and that staff urgently needed help from law enforcement," said North Charleston mayor Keith Summey in a video statement.

Mayor Summey and the city of North Charleston released a video response regarding NCPD's role in the arrest of Sutherland. The video includes excerpts of the initial 9-1-1 call from the behavioral health center in which Sutherland was a patient.

While in lockup Jamal looked like he was under distress.

The caller says that patients are fighting and that several people are in danger. The situation escalates and the caller says that Jamal [Sutherland] has assaulted a staff member. She calls for help multiple times.

Summey made clear that although it was a mental health crisis, Sutherland could not be transported to another behavior center because he was already interned into one. He said that NCPD had no choice but to transport him to a safe location, that was the county lockup.

The video shows Sutherland being booked into the lockup. The deputies first approach Sutherland's cell in an attempt to take him before a bond court judge.

Then they pepper sprayed him. Then a deputy used a Taser striking Sutherland.

Soon Sutherland was unconscious. He was being resuscitated but to no avail. He would die at a local hospital only45 minutes later.

Charleston County Coroner's Office Bobbi Jo O'Neal was first identified Sutherland as an inmate-related death days later. The cause of the death was "excited state with adverse pharmacotherapeutic effect during subdual process."

The coroner said his death was "undetermined."

Detention Deputy Brian Houle and Sergeant Lindsay Fickett were involved in the matter and were placed in the freezer. They were reassigned to other positions.

Charleston County Sheriff Kristin Graziano released a statement saying that her department sympathizes with the family and they will get to the bottom of the matter.

She talks about the following the family's wishes and that is "clearly time for the public to view what happened."

Jamal's family wants justice.

She also said, "This unfortunate tragedy has revealed an opportunity to review existing policies. Similarly, we are looking at ways to improve safety for our staff members and the residents of our detention center."

"Since this tragedy occurred, we have assessed our resources and are evaluating options for global improvement, including a focus on mental health awareness.... This must be changed, and I am committed to implementing that change. These are systematic issues that our nation is facing on a daily basis."

There were calls for the resignation of the sheriff and calls for the immediate arrest of those involved.

A Justice for Jamal rally was held on Friday immediately after the video release.

The latest police incident in the United States. Again, a never ending theme here on Journal de la Reyna is the “What Happened To” postings. I often do these postings in regards to the latest incident involving a person of color being either killed by gun or racially motivated violence.

Everyday, we still see these incidents of people of color being shot and killed by the police. Time after time, law enforcement seem to be never held accountable for shooting Black men and women. It's always the cop's word over the dead body.

I hope that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris work on police reform.

What should the police do when they're dealing with a mentally ill suspect?
They should engage in non-violent restraint if the suspect is unarmed.
They should engage in use of force if the suspect is armed with an instrument that can harm.
They should have a mental health counselor or a special liaison to handle the matter.
They should leave the matter to professional medical officials.
No answers to the question.

It never stops!

It never happens in your community....... Until it does! Every community in the United States will eventually have a legacy. A legacy of tragedy. Gun violence and COVID-19 will affect your town, your family and your life. So I don't want to hear that bullshit about how this gun reform is taking away your rights. I don't want to hear that protesting against police killing people of color is hate on cops in general. I don't want to hear talk about the coronavirus being a myth. I don't want hear folks say this is not white privilege. I don't want to hear folks say masks impede their freedoms. I don't want to hear the shit about guns saving lives. These incidents are a tragic part of American history.

FOR EVERY BAD COP, THERE WILL BE A DEAD COP!

I DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET OR THE COP'S VERSION.

THERE IS NO GOD!

GOD IS NOT FIXING THIS!

FUCK YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!

We haven't forgotten about the many mass shootings in the United States. COVID-19 doesn't stop individuals from picking up firearms and killing others.

And I am getting fucking tired of white nationalists and their enablers of color complaining about the lack of Black fathers. The fathers are either killed by gun violence, police violence, COVID-19, heart disease, diabetes, freak accidents and just being Black in America.

The website Officer Down is a memorial to those who were killed in the line of duty. Those who don't get their names mentioned in the junk food media. Also the website the National Gun Violence Memorial also keeps record of the many individuals killed by gun violence
