A crack in the structural beam of a bridge has forced the state of Tennessee and Arkansas to shut it down. They literally were concerned the bridge may collapse.

Last week, bridge inspectors saw a huge crack in a support beam. Inspectors literally had to call the law. The caller demanded the Tennessee State Police and Arkansas State Patrol to shut it down.

The Interstate 40 bridge known as the Hernando De Soto Bridge is closed. It is one of two bridges in the Memphis area that crosses Mississippi River.

It is one of the major thoroughfares to the West.

With the bridge closed, more traffic will go on Interstate 55. It will go through some of the most dangerous intersections in the city of Memphis. The detour is over 12 miles. It will cross the older Memphis-Arkansas Bridge. That bridge is dangerous as well.

The exit ramp at Riverside Drive and Edward Hull Crump Boulevard is dangerous. The cloverleaf interchange is known for commercial trucks and haulers to overturn. The proposal to streamline Interstate 55 and convert the partial cloverleaf interchange into a direct ramp and roundabout is still held up because of Congress not passing legislation.

Many commuters will be forced to travel Interstate 55 to get to Interstate 240 (Future Interstate 69) northbound for downtown Memphis and Interstate 40.

What's worse is folks have to take Interstate 155 to Dyersburg to get into Tennessee. So basically, if you're heading south on Interstate 55 from St. Louis, you will have to detour to Interstate 155 in rural Missouri. It diverts 15 miles from Interstate 55. Then you will have to cross the Caruthersville Bridge to get into Dyersburg. Then you will have to take U.S. 51 for 64 miles to get to Memphis.

Tennessee has not broken ground for Interstate 69 to be built around Dyersburg.

The delays will impact the South. It's already bad that the Colonial Pipeline hacking incident put a dent into the South and Northeast. Now this will impact people traveling from St. Louis, Nashville, Jackson, Birmingham, Little Rock, Jonesboro, Tunica and Dyersburg.

The proposal to make Interstate 269 a full beltway is on the table as well. It would require Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas build new bridges (possibly toll) to cross the Mississippi River.

That's a huge crack. That is very structurally deficient.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation said Monday the inspector who did the inspection on the I-40 bridge in downtown Memphis in 2019 and 2020 has been fired.

"This is not about the failure of one person," ARDOT Director Lorie Tudor said. "Our investigation revealed negligence and process failure of ARDOT. We should have determined this fracture in 2019 and corrected the flaws in our process."

The director said a drone will be used extensively in future inspections, and they are reviewing the inspection process to ensure this "never happens again."

Friday, those with ARDOT conceded the the crack on a support steel beam existed since 2019.

Last week, another inspector for the I-40 bridge's cables and upper portion found the crack, shutting down traffic indefinitely on the major east-west interstate connector.

"Everyone involved in this is very aware of the effects of this structure being closed," ARDOT Deputy Director Rex Vines said.

Vines said a team, led by TDOT, will begin work this week to repair the bridge and reopen traffic for cars and trucks.

It's a two part process: one, stabilizing the damaged steel beam area and two, replacing that damaged section.

A clearer timeline on when traffic can return on some or all lanes of the I-40 bridge is expected sometime this week.

"The hope is phase two, when we get the girder replaced, is when we will be allowed to get traffic back on it," Vines said.

Tudor called the situation unacceptable and promised ARDOT would move up the chain of command to identify other bridge inspection failures and correct them.

"We are in in the process to referring this matter to the proper federal authorities for their determination if further investigation, criminal or otherwise, is warranted," Tudor said.

The white nationalist Republican senators Tom Cotton of Arkansas, John Bozeman of Arkansas, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee. These senators, the other 46 Republicans and two white nationalist Democrats are stalling the American Jobs Plan.

They oppose the bill because of the spending. Now their principles are hurting their constituents.

This is not the only bridge that is having dangerous ramifications. The Brent Spence Bridge which crosses the Ohio River and connects Cincinnati with the South is dangerous as well. It carries Interstate 75 and Interstate 71. It is considered one of the most dangerous bridges in the United States.

Interstate 75 is a notable freeway for travel from Canada to Florida. Over 60,000 commuters go through Cincinnati into Covington, Kentucky.

The white nationalists Republican senators Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Rob Portman of Ohio have also refused to support the American Jobs Plan.

Even with Washed Up 45 throwing down a proposal to take care of that damn bridge, the Kentucky senators and Ohio senator voiced they're not supporting it.

I've said it best, we need to hold these damn lawmakers accountable. Their principles are going to kill us. Their need to be white nationalists is going to bite them in their asses.
