Chicago braces for potential unrest in the wake of the deadly police shooting of 13-year old Adam Toledo. It only took less than a few seconds before a cop shot and killed Toledo.
Do you see a gun in Adam's hands? In a split second he was shot.
In his body camera, it shows Adam Toledo with his hands up. But of course, the far-right and the police union will claim that he had a weapon on him. He refused to surrender. A cop has to make a split-decision.
Okay, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability released the Chicago Police body camera footage of the fatal shooting is expected to bring outrage.
The incident happened on March 29. The shot spotter detected gunfire in a neighborhood. Eric Stillman, the cop working in the Ogden District can be seen pulling up to an alley. He would get out and start running after him.
"Show me your fucking hands!" Soon it was followed by "drop it! with a flickering flashlight on Adam.
It appears in a frame that Adam had his hands up and within second, the cop shot him.
There was surveillance footage that captured the same moment where they see Adam running in the alley and the cop chasing him. As they end up getting towards a gap fence, the shooting happened.
"Shots fired! Shots fired! Get an ambulance over here now!" Stillman said to dispatch.
The cop then proceeds to perform chest compressions on him.
"Look at me. Look at me. You all right? .... Where are you shot?" the cop says. Adam is pretty much dead and there was nothing the medics can do to save him.
An attorney for Adam Toledo's family stressed that the boy did not have a gun at the exact moment he was shot, though they could not tell with "100 percent certainty" whether he was armed in the seconds leading up to the shooting.
Adeena Weiss Ortiz said that the cops' version doesn't tell the truth. In the video you see Adam with his hands up the moment he was shot.
"If he had a gun, he tossed it ... The officer said, 'show me your hands,' (and Adam) complied," she said.
"The officer is trained to not shoot somebody unarmed. He is trained to look, he is trained not to panic."
Not forgotten.
Lightfoot asked Gov. J.B. Pritzker for the Illinois National Guard and has hinted a curfew in the wake of the video release. She also reached out to the Toledo family. They along with the mayor stress the city for calm in this case.
"We acknowledge that the release of this video is the first step in the process toward the healing of the family, the community and our city," the joint statement said. "We understand that the release of this video will be incredibly painful and elicit an emotional response to all who view it, and we ask that people express themselves peacefully."
Tensions are high in the country. President Joe Biden is tasked to fix the broken police system.
The Democrats in the House of Representatives have passed the George Floyd Police Reform bill. It is being stalled in the Senate. Even though the Democrats have 50 senators with Vice President Kamala Harris being the tie-breaking vote, two white nationalist Democrats refuse to back the elimination of the filibuster. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) are siding with white nationalist Republicans in blocking legislation that many people of color and progressives support.
Adam Toledo, Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, Amhaud Arbey and many many more people of color died because of bad cops.
