Legendary actor George Segal passed away. His family confirmed his passing and the ABC Signature Studios have also confirmed the news. His wife Sonia wrote in a statement:
"The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery."
The news hit the cast of The Goldbergs which was wrapping up it season.

The Goldbergs executive producer Adam F. Goldberg shared his thoughts on the passing of Segal. He called George a great man. Goldberg wrote and produced the semi-autobiographical sitcom and Segal played Adam's grandfather Albert "Pops" Solomon. Pops was Beverly Goldberg's (McLendon-Covey) father.
Today we lost a legend. It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal’s amazing legacy. By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. The Oscar-nominated actor had passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.
His love for the banjo and roles in dramas, horrors and comedy made his a legend.
George performed at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1981 with his group, the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band.
Some of his most notable movies were Ship of Fools (1965), King Rat (1965), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), A Touch of Class (1973) and Flirting with Disaster (1997).
He was one o the first American film actors to rise to leading man status with an unchanged Jewish surname, thus helping to pave the way for artists such as Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand.

For the past eight years, Segal had been a series regular on ABC’s 1980s-set family comedy The Goldbergs. The last episode he filmed before his death, Episode 16 of the show’s current eighth season, is set to air April 7. The series is expected to pay tribute to Segal on-air.
Segal probably is best known for his TV sitcom roles as magazine publisher Jack Gallo on NBC’s Just Shoot Me!, a role that earned him two Golden Globe nominations, and as family patriarch Albert “Pops” Solomon on The Goldbergs. He also headlined the late-’80s ABC detective drama Murphy’s Law, the 1987 CBS comedy Take Five and TV Land sitcom Retired at 35.
Born on February 13, 1934, in Great Neck, NY, Segal did a stint in the military before getting his start on the small screen, guesting on shows including Naked City, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Arrest and Trial.
He also had a handful of Broadway roles, including starring with John Lithgow in the 1985 adaptation of Rod Serling’s Requiem for a Heavyweight and 1999’s Art with Alan Alda, Victor Garbver and Alfred Molina.
Along with his Academy Award nomination, Segal was a five-time Golden Globe nominee and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
