John Lewis In Dire Straits!

Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) announced he is suffering from pancreatic cancer.
Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) has announced he has Stage IV pancreatic cancer.

The longtime Georgia lawmaker and civil rights leader has made the sad news on his social media.

Lewis who once walked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an icon among Black leaders.

The 79-year old lawmaker said he was diagnosed following a routine medical visit with subsequent tests that reconfirm the diagnosis. The lawmaker will undergo treatment for the cancer.

"I have been in some kind of fight -- for freedom, equality, basic human rights -- for nearly my entire life. I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now," Lewis said in a statement.

He said in the statement: "While I am clear-eyed about the prognosis, doctors have told me that recent medical advances have made this type of cancer treatable in many cases, that treatment options are no longer as debilitating as they were once were, and that I have a fighting chance."

In his 17th term as a member of Congress, Lewis is vowing to continue to work. He said that he will return to Washington, DC in the coming days to begin his treatment plan.

"I may miss a few votes during this period, but with God's grace I will be back on the front lines soon," he said.

Former president Barack Obama and Michelle Obama offered their support to the lawmaker.

"If there's one thing I love about (Rep. John Lewis), it's his incomparable will to fight. I know he's got a lot more of that left in him. Praying for you, my friend."

Lewis voted to impeached Donald J. Trump. Trump, the 45th President of the United States joins William Jefferson Clinton and Andrew Johnson as the third president to be impeached while in office.

Trump has criticized Lewis because he believed his district is a "shithole." He has aimed at the late Elijah Cummings of Maryland this year for that. Cummings died this year.

Since the impeachment, Trump has attacked Lewis, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Rep. Justin Amash (I-MI) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).

He has praised Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) for voting present. He made Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) switch parties in his attempts to sway conservative Democrats to join Republicans.

Lewis represents the 5th Congressional District which covers the northern portions of Atlanta.

He was the third chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He took a rock to the head during his march into Selma.
