Luis Gutierrez Bows Out!

Lawmaker Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) retires from Congress.
Democratic lawmaker and activist announces he won't seek reelection. A champion of rights for people of color, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) has been very vocal in opposition of Donald J. Trump.

His retirement opens the door for a replacement.

Jesus "Chuy" Garcia will be formally endorsed by Gutierrez. The Cook County, Illinois commissioner who ran for Chicago mayor against Rahm Emanuel was tempting another run against him.

Garcia said it's best to take the fight to Washington.

Gutierrez was a strong progressive voice. He was advocating for comprehensive immigration reform. He opposed the border wall and Muslim ban. He also wants Republicans to start caring about residents living in American territories.

He will be greatly missed but we will hopefully get a lawmaker strong on civil rights.

This comes as Trump and Republicans are plotting to ram through his tax plan which could strip millions of Americans off the safety net.

This could effect the disaster relief efforts to help victims of hurricanes and wildfire destruction. The people of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Texas, California and Florida are still recovering.
