Lessons learned in Cincinnati in 2001 may help in Ferguson, future | Local News - WLWT Home

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE, WHAT HAPPENED MINUTES OR SECOND BEFORE THAT? OBVIOUSLY THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF ANGER TONIGHT. THE MISSOURI STATE POLICE CAPTAIN NOW HANDLING SECURITY IN FERGUSON, AVERAGE ACKNOWLEDGING TODAY THAT CHANGES HAVE TO BE MADE. THERE ARE BIGGER THINGS THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN AFTER THIS IS OVER. THERE ARE THINGS THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN AFTER THIS IS OVER TO MAKE US ALL BETTER AND THEY NEED TO CONTINUE TO HAPPEN, AND TRAINING, DIVERSITY, HAVING MORE MINORITY OFFICERS IN OUR COMMUNITIES. AS PART OF THOSE CHANGES IT'S GOING TO INCLUDE LESSONS LEARNED FROM CINCINNATI. WLWT'S NEWS 5 ANDREW SETTERS SHOWING HOW OUR CURRENT AND FORMER POLICE CHIEF ARE GETTING INVOLVED. AN UNARMED BLACK MAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN FERGUSON, MISSOURI, POLICE HAVE BEEN SLOW TO RELEASE INFORMATION AND ANGER HAS GROWN INTO RIOTS. THERE ARE SIMILARITIES TO WHAT HAPPENED HERE IN 2001. WE DIDN'T TOMORROW FORWARD WITH INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED, AND AT SOME POINT TIME HAD PASSED, SO MUCH TIME HAD PASSED THAT IT REALLY DIDN'T MATTER ANY MORE WHAT WE HAD TO SAY BECAUSE THERE WAS SUCH A DEGREE OF SUSPICION AND A LACK OF TRUST IN OUR AGENCY. THAT IS SOMETHING WE HAD TO DIG OURSELVES OUT OF A HOLE WITH. TOM STRIKER LED THE CITY THROUGH THE RIOTS AND THE RECOVERY WHICH INCLUDED THE INVOLVEMENT IN THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IN A COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENT TO MAKE REFORMS MUCH. THE BIGGEST LESSONS LEARNED RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE COMMUNITY ARE IMPORTANT. THE CHIEF THEN AND THE CHIEF NOW HAVE BOTH BEEN ON CNN IN THE PAST 24 HOURS TO TALK ABOUT THE CINCINNATI EXAMPLE. AND I DO THINK THAT WE WOULD HAVE HANDLED THIS SITUATION A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IN TRUTH TELLING AND BEING TRANSPARENT WITH OUR COMMUNITY HERE IN CINCINNATI. YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE POLICE INVOLVED SHOOTING JUST LAST WEEK. CHIEF BLACKWELL WAS ON THE SCENE OVERNIGHT SHARING INFORMATION. HOURS LATER HE HELD A NEWS CONFERENCE, SHARED VIDEO AND SPOKE AT LENGTH. BLACKWELL INHERITED A DEPARTMENT THAT HAD LEARNED HARD LESSONS. I THINK THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON, AND THE ONLY WAY THAT YOU BUILD COLLABORATION IS THROUGH TRUST AND THROUGH RELATIONSHIP, AND IT HAS TO BE AUTHENTIC. STRIKER'S ADVICE FOR LEADERS IN FERGUSON FACE THE COMMUNITY'S CRITICISM, LISTEN AND LEARN. AT SOME POINT THEY WILL HAVE TO EMBRACE THIS CRITICISM, EMBRACE THIS ANGER AND FRUSTRATION AS A NEW FORM OF ENERGY TO HELP THINGS GET BETTER, AND THAT'S THE ONLY WAY IT CAN BE DONE. ANDREW SETTERS, WLWT NEWS 5. BY THE WAY A DELEGATION FROM
