Chiara de Blasio: I'm Only Human!

Bill de Blasio's daughter Chiara reveals to the press her battles with depression and drug abuse.

The racist right hates Bill de Blasio. They hate him just as much as President Barack Obama. The reason why, is purely simple.

The mayor-elect of New York City ran on a populist agenda that rolls back NYPD's stop-and-frisk policy, one of the country's harshest police profiling policies pushed by the aggressive predecessors Michael Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani.

The racist right can't stand him for being married to a "strong Black woman" and having "mixed children" as well.

I've heard conservative agitators say that de Blasio is a "communist" and "traitor". They've called him the "White Obama" because he believes in income inequality. That issue continues to plague New York City's residents.

Then of course, the racist right is rooting for despair in New York City. They hope that his first term results in epic crime, a terrorist attack and people moving out because they can't stand a Democrat running the city.

Well here comes another bone for the racist right to chew on. Since children and young adults are off limits in the era of politics, the racist right will ignore that and focus on the problems.

Chiara de Blasio, the 19-year old daughter of the mayor is telling the world that she has a problem. She wants to tell the world that she can handle her problems with the help of family and a support group.

She revealed to the press in a five minute video about her depression, her addiction to marijuana and alcohol.

Of course, young teens will try something new once in awhile. I mean no one is perfect. But her father's opponents will try to milk this into a sensational story. I can figure that Rupert's New York Post will find some outcry about it.

There limited media appearances for Chiara, who with her 16-year-old brother Dante featured prominently in their father’s recent election campaign. As stated, children are there only when their parent is running. So it would be considered off limits to go after a child.

In the video she stated, “[I've] had depression, like clinical depression for my entire adolescence,” she said, looking healthy and assured.

“It made it easier like the more I drank and did drugs to share some common ground with people that I wouldn’t have.

“It didn’t start out as a huge thing for me but then it became a huge thing for me,” she added, to an accompanying soundtrack of soft piano music.

She credited her therapist for referring her to an out-patient therapy center in New York City, and her mother and busy father with being committed to getting her better.

“Getting sober is always a positive thing and it’s not easy. By no means is it easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done but it’s so worth it,” she said.

The Raw Story added she said beating drugs and alcohol enabled her to participate in her father’s campaign, calling it “like the greatest thing ever”, do well in school and explore things other than partying.

She called on viewers to acknowledge alcoholism and drug addiction as a disease.

“People are suffering from this disease and dying from this disease every day and we really can’t do anything as a society to help those people until we start talking about it,” she said.

According to the video, 28 percent of Americans drink at levels that put them at risk of alcohol dependence.

“If you think you have a problem, don’t wait. Ask for help,” it ended with a written message and the website address for ok2talk.org, which helps young adults who suffer from mental illness.

We here at Journal de la Reyna wish Chiara a successful life.
